jerrypike
new rear shocks for my slr are apparently designed to fit to the middle mount on the de dion tube (as for vx cars i believe) can anyone tell me what the appropriate fixing is for this mounting point please? thanks jerry
Chelspeed
Old de dion tubes had two mounts for the bottom of the rear shocks. The highest one is a tube right thro the middle of the de dion tube so I guess this must be what you have been told is the middle mounting. The lowest one is a tube brazed onto the bottom of the de dion tube. The very latest de dion tubes, since the middle of last year perhaps, only have the lower mount. jerrypike
chelspeed it is indeed the hole through the centre of the tube i was referring to if it's a straight tube then i'll need a longer bolt and nut, any clue as to official size? thanks jerry
Rob Walker
Jerry, I have just looked into this, the nearest bolt that is off the shelf is a 6" long 1/2" UNF, you will need two nylocks and some 1/2" thick washers as spacers. Rob
jerrypike
rob thanks very much, i'll get down to the factors: i assume that stainless will be ok if available, but no particular metal spec?? jerry
Rob Walker
Jerry, Don`t use stainless. You want normal high tensile steel.

Chelspeed
It's a big bugger, well oversized for the loads. Where's Mr Edmands? We need the gun drillers again..... Big bolt thro the top of the diff is the next victim. Any others?
jerrypike
chelspeed i'm reasonably happy it's overspecced, not something i'd want to fail followed the drive shaft/gundrilling thread with interest but have subsequently heard of a number of failures of unmodified drive shafts (albeit on 250 bhp cars: so sadly not a problem for me) strangely enough my friendly fixings shop didn't have any in stock: first time i've stumped them jerry
