Alternator/charging ??

Alan Reeves

Recommended Posts

I had my car in with the two steves during the week for an ECU  tweak and they found that on the various readouts.

The battery readout dropped to about 11v just switching the ignition on ?

Once started the Alternator need around 2000 revs before it actually kicked in?

I know nothing about electrics but does this seem right, Steve was questioning it.

Alan

ps, anyone local can teach me how to use a multimeter ( Gatwick area)

I have just fitted a Brise and when I checked this morning there was no alternator charging activity until I increased the engine revs a bit. I (now) have an increased size pulley which I expect is causing this and by design. Some cars rev so highly (think track use) they make the alternator go more slowly by installing a bigger pulley, so as to protect it (the alternator).

Whether I actually want that behaviour I have to have a think as I don't do tracks.. much... the 'ring occasionally.

@Tony Whitley I've been thinking (given I already have a volts reading in the Stack dash) I could add one of those down at the solenoid so that (even if briefly) I could see the actual voltage (drop) down there which over time would show me the deterioration and warn me when to replace the wire(s). Just have to make sure I take the earth from the same place as the Stack, currently (!) I have no idea where that is.

What type of alternator, and what wires are attached?
What ECU?

...

As revilla says.

What was the minimum voltage during cranking?

...

What's the voltage at immediate idle, at 3,000 rpm, and at subsequent idle?

...

Does your charging warning light work?
