New owner help

I recently became the owner of a 2013 Supersport R. Absolutely loving it thus far - amazing machine!

3 weeks in though and the speedo died on me yesterday whilst on the motorway. I've been reading often they don't earth correctly however it simply died and is sat at 0mph. Perhaps if the earthing was loose, the gauge might flicker a bit?

Is this a known issue with a simple solution or shall I just start poking around the wires behind the gauge?!

On another note, my insurance need a specialist or car club member to conduct an inspection of the car before issuing me with an agreed value certificate. Being based in central London, I'm wondering whether there are any known individuals who might be able to help with this?

Thanks in advance

Will

Welcome.

I'd start by having a word with Guy Munday.

I'm assuming it's an electronic drive from the gearbox.

Are all other instruments working OK?

Do you have a multimeter and would you like a wiring diagram?

Will,  there is a known problem with cars of that era and a known modification which is to earth the pick up sensor on the rear wheel close by the sensor.  My car is 2012 and CC did the mod for me during first service.  My first symptoms were the speedo worked fine but the odometer would sometimes fail to register the right distance.  Would be worth checking who you bought it from if the mod has been done.  I now occasionally get intermittent speedo failure but a quick wiggle of the cable brings it back. Some on here will tell of sensors failing and a new version being available but I have not needed to go down that route.  Testing the sensor is quite easy too.  There is a light on the end of it that shows when it reads from the wheel.

On your particular car, the speedo will be picking up signals from the speed sensor close to the toothed reluctor ring on the RH driveshaft.  Erratic speedo behaviour is usually due to one of two things:

  1. Incorrect air gap (either too large or too small) between sensor and reluctor ring
  2. Interference in the sensor earth circuit

Have a look at post #4 in this thread for info on how to proceed.

Re agreed value: yes, Guy Munday is definitely your man (he did my valuation).

Thank you everyone for the wise words. I will look into getting the vehicle condition form completed this week. Chose to go with Footman James for the insurance who've been great thus far I must say.

Re the speedo - it appears the speed sensor is the first place to investigate then. This is why I find forums so useful.

I'll get her jacked up this weekend and see if the sensor is registering the teeth correctly as they rotate past as well as the gap being set correctly. Otherwise it'll be an earthing issue I suspect.

Thank you all :)

Is there a convenient description of which Sevens are likely to have which type, perhaps by year and model?

That's a good question, Jonathan.  You can get some idea by browsing CC's Online Store for senders/sensors (either driveshaft- or gearbox-driven), and driveshafts (with sensor ring).  But I guess you'd need to ask  CC themselves to be sure -- someone like Darren or Tony.
