MalcolmK
HiMy new 310s SV has developed a rattle from the Left hand Side wheel which occurs when that wheel is disturbed eg going over bumps as the car is driven. If I do the same with my foot lightly on the brake pedal there is no rattle. At the weekend I investigated this and found nothing loose until I removed the wheel, then I noticed one of the brake pad retaining pins was partly disengaged because the R clip used to retain it was missing.I don't recall not fitting this and the car has been to Caterham for Post Build check and IVA test, and since done 2500 miles. Anyway now problems have resultedSo now I have pushed the pin back through and fitted the R Clip, but the rattle is still there.I think it is the pads which are rattling, but only on the LHS.Any ideas to confirm the cause and fix the problem would be appreciated.ThanksMalcolm
MalcolmK
should say Left hand side Front wheel
Toby S
Not sure on new caterhams what front brake calliper is used - if its still the spitfire single calliper, I found with my 93 Supersport using shims held everything in place nicely. You can get shim kits from either Moss Europe or Rimmer Brothers under Spitfire parts
john milner
There was probably a clip there to begin with and it may have ended up being stuck somewhere it shouldn't. Remove the pads and look for R clip debris, check pad and disc condition and fit shims if the aren't any.The next thing I would try as it involves a bit more work than simple checking is to bleed the system as there is possibly air in the left side allowing the piston to retract further than it should. Jim 123
Your car will be the AP calipers. Have you checked that the anti rattle shim is sitting properly.
gulf 1
I had the exact same thing happen to my 2015 supersport R.One of the R clips came out and one of the brake pad retaining pins was hanging out.I replaced the pin and fitted a new R clip but like you I had a rattle from the pads which stopped when slight pressure was applied to the brake pedal. When I checked the brake assemblies on both sides I noticed that the side that did not rattle had a spring that pressed on the pads to stop them rattling. On the side that rattled this spring was missing, you can identify this spring because it has has a cut out in it in the shape of a direction arrow.I got in touch with a very helpful chap at AP racing and he sent me a couple of these springs and also some R clips.I fitted the new spring and new R clip and the rattle was gone. However on checking the pads a few weeks later I noticed one of the R clips was missing again but the spring was still there this time.I have now replaced all the R clips with split pins so there is no chance they can come out again.Have don't quite a few trackdays since and all is still good.Hope this helps
