hwills
What is needed to be done to fit a k series out of an Elise/Exige in to a Caterham. Is it just swap the sump, engine mounts and ancillaries or is it a more involved job. The 7 already has a 1.6k in it.
revilla
You will have to fit the Caterham water rail and a spigot bearing a sleeve to suit the Type 9 gearbox. More importantly you will need to grind quite a lot of metal out of the side of the block to allow the Caterham starter fitment. I think there is plenty in the archive on this but if you want, BM me your email address and I'll send you photographs of ones I've done, in progress and finished. Word of warning, go VERY carefully with this, you only have to go a very few mm too deep and you make a hole in the block, basically you break through into the oil return channel through which one of the head bolts runs (as did the person who built my car! It cost me a new block, there was too much oil in the aluminium to be able to weld it). Best idea is to take the bellhousing, fit it to the engine, try to fit the starter, see where it hits the block, grind a little away and repeat, many times. You want to end up with a mm or so clearance all round to make sure it sits squarely... Try slipping a piece of cardboard between the various parts of the starter and block once you think it's fitted OK.
Englishmaninwales
If the Elise engine is EU3 and your existing engine/loom is EU2 you’ll need to fit a distributor drive to the inlet camshaft (or if same spec cams the swap the inlet camshaft), unless you fit the whole EU3 ECU/loom/wasted spark system from the Elise. hwills
Thanks for the reply’s and info. The engine I was contemplating getting is too far gone to be swapped straight in without a rebuild. But if anyone wants a potential bargain there’s an S1 Exige at copart
