AP clutch

A recent thread highlighted the unavailability of the AP clutch centre plate for the K series (CP2257-44 diameter 190 mm), and using the alternative Helix clutch.

It seems this is due to AP’s production moving to Italy and it is uncertain when it will resume.

In the mean time, your centre plate can be refurbished (providing it just needs new friction material, and otherwise springs etc are serviceable), contact Alan Carson in the sales department in the AP facility in Coventry. Cost is £63 plus VAT and postage. Nil cost if you send it and it fails inspection.

If you're not fussy about it being an AP clutch plate you can always buy a Sierra kit and bin the rest.  It's frustratingly wasteful but far cheaper.  I did send a few emails back and forth with a clutch manufacturer recently about buying a batch of friction plates without the need to purchase the covers and bearing.  It looked like it was a go'er.

The problem may come for you if it is fitted to R4/500 K, as the AP listed above is up rated for these engines.  CC then spec’ed it across the rest of the K range. So a Helix or Sierra may well be ok for lower performance engines, but I’m unsure for if they are suitable for R’s

Given the various threads about AP friction material disintegrating I'm not sure they can be much better than the others.  My AP one was Valeo friction material, my Helix one is LUK so neither appear particularly exotic.

It's the springs that are stronger in the AP uprated clutch specified by Caterham.
