New 360r has developed a strange squeal or squeek

Hi All my new 360r when under partial throttle around 2500 rpm approx. A weird and constant squeal develops coming from engine bay, if I press the throttle increase or decrease the rpm it disappears, it is apparent in any gear, sounds a little like a belt squeal but that seems ok. Has anyone else encountered this or has any ideas etc, it’s realy annoying have checked for air leaks etc. Thanks John.

Any effect of clutch position?

Can you get it to happen in the garage as well as on the road? How about using a stethoscope (DIY or commercial) to try and localise it?

Hi clutch position doesn’t matter, you can get it to make the noise in the garage or on the road

On a k-series this can happen if cam cover fixing screws are loose on the top of the engine. Maybe you have something similar on your Ford engine ?

Hi just managed to find some old posts, it seems like the new 360 induction air box etc can make strange whisking noises still seems strange if anyone has found a cure, any help would be gratefully received, thanks john

Off topic, what's your LSD like? Mine whines like a b@5tard between 50 and 70 mph. Again, "they all do that sir."

Does the noise go away if you disconnect the airbox trunking?

Check clearance between the drive belt and steering column. If they are touching at certain revs the column will have some tell tale line in the protective coating.

Yes that what cc said, the lsd whines and growls on overrun, have had sevens before and lsd have always made a heck of racket. I can live with that but the induction whistle gets on my nerves a bit.

Hi will check to see if alternator belt is rubbing at certain revs, I will also disconnect the airbox trunking and see if that makes a difference. Thanks

Hi all disconnected airbox and trunking deffo induction squeal, slightly better with no airbox, so I suppose will just have to live with it. John

I’ve seen those 360 plenums distort as you increase the revs, will that be the cause of the noise change?

the earlier 175s have a cast alloy plenum which was changed because?

Mine squeals from the airbox, on light throttle around 2000 rpm.   The plenum distortion is much better with the post 2015 plenum, there is almost none.

For the record I’ve noticed on my 2018 420r that the plenum does distort quite a bit when you blip the throttle, cant say I’ve noticed any squeaks over all the rest of the mechanical noises, lsd included, but then I wear earplugs 99% of the time

In comparison to pre 2015 black plastic plenum, the distortion is almost none ;-) 

Apparently the cast plenum can suffer with heat soaks, seems there is no perfect solution.

Why does this happen... blowing across an orifice or some mode of oscillation of the chamber itself?

I have in the past (not your engine) had a whistle from an air leak between manifold and head..cured with sealant

only takes a small gap/hole to produce a noticeable whistle
