Non-7 head gasket probs

Apologies for using this forum for general head gasket info. I have found blatchat to be an invaluable source of knowledge on cars generally so thought I'd see if anyone had any advice on a problem my housemate's having with his track-car currently. Although he doesn't have a 7, there's no reason why the questions and answers couldn't be directly applicable to an X-flow, VX or K...

At brands on Thursday 4 laps in (probably the most expensive 4 laps of his life!) Dan's golf started churning out white smoke. Back in the pits we all reckoned it was the head-gasket, he'd had a coolant leak a few days earlier so some localised overheating is possible. However, the usual tests on the expansion tank revealed no exhaust gasses in the water. When the engine is un-stressed there is no white smoke in the exhaust.

The possiblities we have come up with (in order of expense):

1. Head gasket - we're replacing it next Sunday

2. Warped head - time for a skim

3. Cracked head - time for a skip!

4. Cracked block - time for a new car

However, given the possiblities above, I can't see how coolant would get into the cylinders without exhaust gasses getting into the water. Does anyone have any ideas?
