Shorten type 9 long input shaft

I shortened mine when going from 1400 K to 1800 K.

Work out how long much too long it is, then use a steel cutting blade in an angle grinder to slice the correct amount off. Re-shape with a regular grinding disc.

Make sure the cars in gear or it'll take all day *cool*

I've shortened a long input shaft, used with a crossflow, to the middle length for the Vauxhall engine. That meant taking 12mm of the end. You can do this without getting near the splined bit.

I would be very worried though that if you need to go all the way from the longest to the shortest then you'll be wanting to take off a lot more than 12mm. I would think there's a big risk that the plain bit left wouldn't be long enough. If you can put the input shaft in a lathe then I would think you could machine off part of the spline bit but of course you need to strip the box to do that. And if you're doing that then to be honest I'd just buy a new short input shaft.

I think you need to get some detailed measurements from both a long and short shaft before you can see if it's feasible. Or talk to one of the gearbox specialists, SPC, BGH or Road and race.

Thanks guys some food for thought.

Any one happen to have a short input shaft type 9 on a bench that they could measure bearing to spline, spline length and locating plain end length.

Cheers
