Garth
Have my engine out and want to give the engine bay a good clean - plenty of stuff on the net - but would be grateful for some blatchat experience! Do not want to go too mad, but keen to get ride of the grime, oil etc. before touching up any rust etc.In anticipation.... Garth

Ivaan
Motorcycle cleaners are very good for getting rid of the grime and excess grease.
Wrightpayne
I’d avoid wd40 if you’re wanting to paint afterwards.I’d use white spirit on a rag, which will remove any grease / oil / waxoil, then follow up with meths on a clean bit of rag to degrease the white spirit.I actually hoovered down between the side skins and chassis rails with the henry as there was lots of detritus. All followed up with fresh hot dinitrol.Ian
davejmitch
I’ve just removed almost 30 years of grime from my supersprint using Bilthamber surfex HD. It’s confusingly impressive as it removes grease like pure alcohol does yet it’s water based therefore in my mind i had previously dismissed it. Great at removing sticky label residue and rescuing oily clothes. Worth looking in to
Garth
Have ordered some Bilthamber surfex HD!Have meths and white spirit and WD40!Which Dinitrol product did you use Ian?
Wrightpayne
3125 cavity wax in an aerosol - just stick tin in a jug of hot water. Also, I heated up the garage / panels with a fan heater as February when I did it. Couple of hours in the sun should be fine!Ian

Jonathan Kay
I’ve just removed almost 30 years of grime from my supersprint using Bilthamber surfex HD. It’s confusingly impressive as it removes grease like pure alcohol does yet it’s water based therefore in my mind i had previously dismissed it. It's a mixture of two detergents, so it needs a water phase.Jonathan
Jonathan Kay
Garth: Several alternative suggestions there... how about doing a direct comparison of them on your surfaces and seeing which works best and which is easiest?Jonathan
davejmitch
Thanks for the science bit, here’s some pics of surfex hd sprayed on neat to a mixture of oil waxoil crud etc on my restoration project. Between the 2nd and third pics I sponged off the grime with a damp sponge. First time Ive uploaded pics so hopefully that works!

davejmitch
Marvelous, I edited the post to space the pictures out a little for clarity, thought it best not to post “touching pics”...
aerobod - near CYYC
Perhaps Monster energy drink would be the best gunk remover?: https://rumble.com/v52ex7-energy-drink-cleans-better-than-brake-cleaner.html
Jonathan Kay
Is that the high citrus variety of Monster?Coca-Cola is a surprisingly good cleaner, presumably because of the phosphoric acid. But I've never understood the chemistry of bike cleaners that smell of citrus... is it the acid, citric acid, limonene... ?Jonathan
