D Jones
Has anyone purchased flat carbon sheet and replaced the internal panels on an SV 2004 vintage. If so what thickness and where did they purchase them from (they do not exist on the caterham website)
JonL
Daniel French did, and wrote about it. I haven't seen him post on here for a while, but I guess you can contact him through his bloghttp://www.caterhamr500.co.uk/2016/01/carbon-interior-install-day-one-prep.html
mark_w
easy composites do sheets of various sizes if your thinking of cutting your own panels 1mm should be thick enough
mossy7
Sorry to jump in the thread a bit but any advice on working with carbon sheets? I.e. Best way to cut, shape and drill?
Strangely
Mossy7, I found this to be very helpful, and I echo their recommendation of Perma-Grit tools, they made my job much easier.Cutting Carbon Fibre Sheet, Tube and Parts
mossy7
Strangely, that's brilliant, thank you!Back to the un high-jacked OP!
JNC
On the negative ! You will have loads of ends of pop rivets rattling around in the box section
Dr Slotter
I can vouch for easycomposites, we use them a lot a work.
SM25T
Inject a lot of Waxoyl into rivet holes in the chassis .... this will catch any rivet heads and stop the rattling
JNC
I thought about Waxoyl but that will melt in the summer and leak all over the place ! Is there some sort of glue available that could be used ? Perhaps silicon
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted April 25, 2018 Leadership Team Share Posted April 25, 2018 Re the waxoyl thing .... I replaced my interior panels around 10 years ago and injected lots of Waxoyl into the chassis tubes, around 4L of the stuff. In hot weather it does leak out, amazingly through the rivets themselves, and if I was doing the job again I'd use closed end rivets to reduce the leaking although as yet I've not found any closed end rivets available in black. No rattling from the old rivets though. But .... if the Waxoyl can get out, water can get in. At least with plenty of Waxoyl in the chassis tubes there's more corrosion protection than without.Stu. JNC
How much does 4Ltrs of Waxoyl weigh ? doesn't it defeat the point !
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted April 25, 2018 Leadership Team Share Posted April 25, 2018 Erm, there's probably only 3 litres left ....
Area Representative Nick Chan Posted April 25, 2018 Area Representative Share Posted April 25, 2018 Is the rattling of drilled out rivets a factual or anecdotal point? I'd be surprised if you could hear anything against the din of the car!I have drilled them out when changing sill protectors from SS to carbon and not noticed any additional noise. I expect they have all dropped inside the tubes and wedged themselves together. Now their added weight, that's another matter...
Area Representative bluenose Posted April 25, 2018 Area Representative Share Posted April 25, 2018 Well I replaced my Blackbird floors with lowered ones and never heard the rivets, don't know why?
D Jones
Thanks to all who commented, much appreciated. I've taken my car off its winter axle stands (thinking the summer had arrived and I might miss out on some blatting) having got through several upgrades, but not all and the interior cosmetic panels are not a priority. I shall purchase some 6mm carbon and when the winter comes round again pull the car apart and continue with the upgrades I purchase during the summer. TomB
6mm Carbon sounds really thick for an interior panel?
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted April 25, 2018 Leadership Team Share Posted April 25, 2018 6mm CF will weigh more than the original ally!
TomB
And stick out - youll have a CF lip. The Ali is only 1-2mm thick.
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted April 25, 2018 Leadership Team Share Posted April 25, 2018 I think the ally interior side panels are 1mm. I measured the standard floors and they're 1.5mm, lowered floors are 3mm and much more substantial. I suspect 2mm CF would do the job fine for the interior side panels/tunnel.Stu. D Jones
Gentlemen, my apologies that should have read 1mm, my existing Ali panels look like they have been chewed by a dog along the top edge, so God only knows what has happened to them before me!Jonathan, I will follow up with photos, But could be some time....... Area Representative Bizzielizzie13 Posted April 26, 2018 Area Representative Share Posted April 26, 2018 I would echo comment about Perma-Grit Tools, very good indeed for working Carbon & as supplied to F1 teams!
ccconn
Given the 620r has carbon interior panels you could ask CC and wait for the inflated price!. At least they would be cut to size though
