EFA
The K in my garage is now running but I do not have a working oil pressure sender. Seems there are several types - can anyone with a reasonable recent (say '99 on) wet sump car, take a digi pic of the filter housing and email it to me, as I have a feeling the Caterham filter housing and the Rover type are not all the same...... Lawrence_Z
The only difference should be the thread on the sender tapping, IIRC Caterham buy blanks and tap them themselves.........but you can make adaptors or buy them here Lawrence
EFA
Graham, Could be.... The two types I have seen are: A 1400 Caterham supplied K where the sender (smaller thread) screws in from above the filter housing, and a 1.6 of unknown source where the oil press switch (larger thread) screws in from the crank pulley side of the filter housing. Its my preference to use the latter, but I am not sure the sender will fit in the space - it would effectively be very much up agaisnt the front of the crankcase. The fitted unit (with switch, instead of sender) is here Is this the same as on the more recent K engines??? My concern is that the K - particularly around the Alternator/crank pulley/oil pump etc has been revised over the years, to the extent that some parts are now unavailable. Alos, its the pic above the same as on a dry sump EU3 K where the oil pressure switch/sender are on a remote T piece?? Lawrence_Z
Aha! If you fit the sender on the front of the housing it'll not last 5 minutes, due to stone damage, before giving poor readings. The main advantage of the hose is to put the sender in a safe place. You can get a hose to fit either housing from think Lawrence
CHRIS CLARK
Arnie, The 1400 SS used to have the VDO sender fitted above as stated. Good for damage limitation? Nope. I had two problems with it. First was when trying to change an alternator belt and the belt was a bit small (though same numbers etc) Pushed it in as far as possible to give shortest run; crushed top of sender can. 10 bar pressure at all times! Second time was when an alternator bolt sheared and dropped the alt onto it bu**ering up yet another 35 ukp sender! 🙆🏻 Have the later front mounted one now and touch this wooden desk it's OK at present. Remote mounting would make sense though. Possibly with the 'T' piece to a variable pressure switch to give warning of impending failure due low oil pressure with a large light on dash? Think Auto do all this kit inc the variable pressure set switch.
