James.Burton
I'm gradually adjusting / improving my Caterham. Suspension upgrade done, lowered floor so I can see better, etcetera. Since owning the car, I have issues getting a fast change from 2nd to 3rd. Rush it and I'm blocked, which isn't much fun mid overtake on the twisties. Can anybody let me know if this is just something I have to live with, or is their a simple fix of rebuilding the synchromesh. If so, what might that cost? Also, I noticed you can get sequential gearboxes on the newer toys. Coming from riding motorbikes, I wonder why they aren't standard? Is there any reason not to have one? Thanks in advance for any advice
ECR
3rd gear synchro is often problematic in our cars. Sounds like the box needs a rebuild ... The overriding reason that sequential boxes aren't standard is one of cost

andyl
It does not sound like synchro problems to me, have you checked the selectors? Also someone on here might know but I have read that the sequential boxes can't change gear when stationary (which may mean a high gear start?), maybe a more enlightened 7'er can help? James.Burton
Sadly not. I live in Austria. It makes finding cars, parts, and specialist trickier, and a heck of a lot more expensive. Still, the mountain passes on the door step are good compensation.Andyl - Selector? Any tips on a quick check for somebody with 1.5 left thumbs? simon_h
Get the box out and get it rebuilt. Sounds the same as a friend of mine had and it was a broken dog ring (think that's what he said).
ECR
The synchro rings are bronze and can last well in a road driven car. However, if the car is used for competition where fast changes are the norm the rings take a hammering and over time can crack. The solution is a new bronze ring,or, if you are fast changing all the time, a steel version is/was available from specialists (this has to be lapped to the gear hub if I remember correctly.I went through both these iterations and because my car is mainly used on track ended up by swapping the whole geartrain for a dog box (no synchro)
elie boone
For a seqential gearbox have a look at Sadev, they have a box that is a direct fit as is used on the R500/620 they can be put in neutral at standstill from any gear you where in. http://www.sadev-tm.com/en/gearboxes-and-differentials/2wdl/?pid=84 for the box and for a dealer just contact Sadev maybe there is a dealer in Austria but it's not shown on the map. James.Burton
FYI - It turned out to be an incorrect clutch plate - too big. As the American's would say, "WTF".
