TomB
My LHS steering rack gaitor is split. I have the widetrack conversion with the extension piece on my steering arms. Im trying to work out where I need to break the rod to take the gaitor off.I think the extension should be fitted to the ball joint with nutlock so this is is solid. The main part of the rack rod should still turn in the inboard end of the extension piece to allow for toe adjustment, so to split it, I need to turn the steering rod using the flats on the rod which will leave the extension piece attached to the ball joint. Then I can replace the gaitor. If I wrap a piece of insulation tape around the thread and mark the top of the lock nut I should be able to put it back with the current toe setting. Is this right? MADMALC
Yes. I find Tipex is best for marking things. The brush version is ok but the ones with a ball valve are better. Mark the rod and the track rod end and count the number of turns carefully and write it down.
Dr Slotter
Yep that's what I've done before, although, as Malc says, it's best to use something 'thinner' than insulation tape.
