CB
I need a new reluctor ring (the toothed wheel on the RHS drive shaft that the speedo sensor reads from). Anyone : 1) got one spare 2) got a drive shaft with one on I can have 3) know where I can get one Chris
John Vine
A bit of a thread resurrection, but did you ever find a source of new rings? They seem to be rarer than unobtainium.JV
CB
I ended up getting one second hand. Whilst I was looking though, these guys https://exmol.com/ said they would be able to make one up. At the time the cost would have been £120 ex vat for 1, £75 each for 2, dropping via several steps to to £40 each for more than 10.
John Vine
Thanks for that. You didn't happen to measure the ring, did you -- in particular, the I/D?JV
CB
the dimensions I had at the time were43 teeth internal dia. 73mm outer dia. 93mmBut those come with absolutely no warranty at all - so use at your own risk...
John Vine
Many thanks. For info, I asked CC yesterday what the I/D was (via "ask an expert" on the Parts site) and they replied just now with 71.4mm, so that matches pretty well.JV
aerobod - near CYYC
There is a possibility of using a standard ring (such as a Rover 43 tooth one) then having a plain sleeve machined to make up the difference in diameter between the ring I/D and driveshaft O/D. Mechanical Moz
#3 - Their sister site https://reluctorrings.com/ says if the car isn't listed by them and you're the first person to request one they'll make it for free. Worth an ask JV?
John Vine
On the assumption that GKN make our driveshafts, I've asked them if they can supply the ring, and also provide measurements of the ring (I/D) and tripod tulip (O/D). If/when I hear back, I'll post up details. As was suggested here, maybe the 71.4mm is actually 2 13/16" converted?Re #8: Thanks for the pointer - I'll follow it up. But they do say "ABS" so they may baulk at the idea of a "speedo" ring. Also, I guess I'll need to provide accurate measurements as well.JV
Area Representative Richard Price Posted September 15, 2021 Area Representative Share Posted September 15, 2021 I measured up a few tripode drive shafts a few months ago to make up some trigger wheels for traction control. The rings I had laser cut at 72.6mm diameter fit all of the shafts I've tried them on. John Vine
Re# 10:That's very interesting, Richard. Can you say who cut the rings for you, and the cost? And do you know the O/D of the rings and how many teeth they have?JV
Area Representative Richard Price Posted September 27, 2021 Area Representative Share Posted September 27, 2021 John,I had a batch of parts laser cut by https://fractory.com/I had various different parts cut including wheel speed trigger wheels for both front and rear wheel speeds, and a few other unrelated parts, all cut from the same sheet of 1.5mm mild steel sheet. Most of the cost is actually in putting a sheet of steel on the machine. If I'd just wanted two parts, the cost would have been about £85 inc delivery.I ended up having 25 parts cut in total for just under £90 delivered. The trigger wheels I had cut all have sixteen teeth, and have an OD of around 104mm once folded (each tooth is folded and the sensor mounted at 90° to the shaft). The rear wheel speed trigger wheels are actually designed to be mounted on the inner end of the drive shaft, with sensors mounted on brackets off the side of the diff. The sensors I'm using have a sensing range of 2.5mm, so are much less sensitive to adjustment to those that Caterham supply, so much less susceptible to mechanical damage through being set too close to their target, or not seeing the target by being too far from the target (maybe due to a flexing bracket?). https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/proximity-sensors/1646098/?relevancy-data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searchHistory=%7B%22enabled%22%3Atrue%7D
John Vine
Re #12:Thanks for that, Richard, and apologies for not replying sooner.I imagine the cost of just a few rings might prove too expensive? From reading their website, your supplier would need a CAD file? I've no idea how to go about that.I'm still waiting to hear back from GKN, but I'm fast losing patience with them....JV

Tuck2020
Clive has been kind enough to send me a reluctor ring - thanks Clive.I only possess a very cheap set of digital callipers, and have nothing to check their accuracy against, so I have measured several times in the hope that my results are consistent with the same kit.Inside diameter 71.8mmOutside diameter 93.2 mmThickness - 8.8mm Depth of teeth- tricky one, approx 2.5 mmI hope this is of some use to someone. aerobod - near CYYC
About 0.1mm of interference fit is needed between the ring and driveshaft shoulder, so an accurate measurement of the ring inner diameter and driveshaft shoulder outer diameter is important to ensure the right interference fit. With the driveshaft at room temperature the ring needs to be heated in an oven to 250C or so to easily drop on to the shoulder without needing to use a press (assuming the shoulder is clean and smooth with no corrosion).
