Area Representative Nick Bassett Posted January 16, 2018 Area Representative Share Posted January 16, 2018 Hi there,While I have the alternator & exhaust off my SL R I thought I'd have a go at fitting the Brise Axial starter I've had sitting in my garage for a while now. So before I do, is there anything I should/shouldn't do? The car is currently on a ramp in gear - should it be in neutral? Does that matter?!I know the K series standard starter uses a spacer ring - is this still needed? Also, I'm sure in the past I've seen other 7s with some kind of flexible heat shield material covering the starter and held in place with stainless tie wraps - any recommendations here as I don't want to cook my lovely new Brise starter? Many thanksNick
Jonathan Kay
In addition to the mechanical fit I'd look in advance at the electrical connections. The terminal layouts and requirements for different models are on the Brise site and in the archives: there might be some changes needed on the warning light and the exciting feed. All soluble but a nuisance if you don't spot it in advance. What was the old starter and/or what wires are dangling nearby? And do you have a multimeter? :-)Jonathan
Englishmaninwales
NickNo spacer need.Small amount of fettling metal off the crankcase was needed. The older Brise has the solenoid under this starter, so the wires were a slight stretch, so I recall I lengthened both the solenoid signal and brown car 12v feed wires and renewed the starter lead with a longer one. I ran all the wires through heat shield tubing and installed a separate relay to protect against k click.Never had any heat related problems (but sadly the solenoid has failed - maybe heat? Brise don’t support my particular model any longer, and a specialist auto electrician was unable to identify the solenoid despite an extensive search - cheapo made in China) so I’ve had to re-fit the original.Malcolm
Area Representative Nick Bassett Posted January 16, 2018 Author Area Representative Share Posted January 16, 2018 Thanks both. The axial starter has a built in solenoid at the rear I believe Malcolm, so hopefully shielded somewhat from the heat, but I still might add some wrap.Shielding the wiring sounds like a good idea too. Englishmaninwales
NickJust make sure any foil covering on the fabric heat shield tubing for the wiring is stripped well away from any exposed terminals on the starter cable....guess how I know....it was touching the terminal and crankcase!Malcolm
