Area Representative peewee7 Posted February 26, 2003 Area Representative Share Posted February 26, 2003 BW, I've had the same kind of problem, it happened when I was making a routine inspection of the peddle box area and droped a screw down into the bell housing. Removing the rubber cover on top of the bell housing with metal clip inside didnt help, but removing the starter motor and 1 1/2" ally billet spacer did. I used a strightened coat hanger with a smashed up bit of fish tank glass cleaning magnet..... After collecting the offending little *mad*ard I was well chuffed. I wish you well, kinda took me back to "hook a duck" as a kid at Goose Fair Nottingham. Just a thought, is the offending object metalic of lead pee wee
F355GTS
Cable is Caterham specific so a Caterham dealer or Dartford Mark
ROC
It happened to me six months ago in the middle of nowhere in Sri Lanka. I had to have a local work shop turn a new piece out on a lathe and then braze it on. it is still holding today I lost the clip from inside the rubber cover into the box. The solution I found a lady that didn't mind getting oil on her hands. 5 seconds later, hey presto. Good luck ❗
elie boone
Better get it out because it can jam the clutch, a friend of mine had it but he has already broken 3 cables he could'nt engage any gear at a point. We managed to get it out by rocking the car in gear but it still is in the bellhousing.
Rob Walker
If you take the sump off you can gain access to the bottom of the bellhousing anything that has dropped in can be retrieved through this method.
jerrypike
IIRC just dropping the sump off a K-series isn't something to do because of the bolt/"club"sandwich construction i'm sure PC will correct me if wrong jerry
Andy Best
Bruce, I've got a spare clutch cable, and can take it to work (Manchester City Centre) tomorrow. As far as I know the only place you can get a spare is Caterham. The sump can be removed without any problems, apart from the oil. Andy
Mike Biddle
You can buy a a tool with a flexible shaft and a magnet on the end which will retreive it easily. Not expensive, easier than removing the sump, and for sure you will need it again someday.
Rob Walker
Jerry your getting mixted up with the main oil rail gallery plate/headbolts, removing the head bolt torque allows the block to distort. There is no problem removing the sump.
Graham Sewell
I thought that dropping the sump was part of the standard 6000 mile service on K-series engines so that you can replace the foam baffle. Therefore, it should not be that hard. Low tech luddite - xflow and proud!
jerrypike
rob apologies, does same apply to dry sumped engines? thanks jerry

Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted February 28, 2003 Leadership Team Share Posted February 28, 2003 Bruce, Make sure you also retrieve the small rubber grommet that holds the cable end "up" in the clutch arm - if it's not still in position, it too will be down at the bottom with Gollum Come along to the bolton meet on Wednesday (5th) and update us on how you've got on? CHRIS CLARK
I have to say that I was advised to carry a spare clutch and accelerator cable in the boot and do so now. I have had cause to use the original 'spare' as the clutch got stiffer & stiffer to use. It was the nylon outer covering that they fit to the inner steel wire that had worn and 'puckered ' up causing monumental drag!!! As to the problem a magnet on a stick (about 3 quid at the market tool stand) may help.
BWJ777
*smile* *smile* *smile* *smile* Ohh Yeh........................... Jacked up front end bent the magnet on a stick thing (r shape) then went fishing found gold hiding under the clutch plate *smile* *smile* *smile* *smile* Now all I need is Caterham to post me that cable. Thanks again everyone! Bruce , Self Drive ROLLER COASTER Owner R300 FUN
