Davesvroadsport
Some conflicting information I've received over the past few months has led me to ponder the oil-type I'm currently using. I have a K-Series 1800 (non-VVC) with forged pistons and some rudimentary porting work on the head. I've been using Millers Oils CFS 10w-60 Competition synthetic oil this summer, on recommendation of a trusted friend. I do mostly fast blats and trackdays with some gentle cruising when the missus in in the car! Are the thinning/thickening characteristics of this viscosity spread appropriate for the car/performance/use? Interested to hear others opinions.....Dave
SM25T
Normally 5W-50 for a non-VVC k-series.
Toby S
I use Comma fully synthetic 5W 50 as recommended in handbook for my 1400 K Supersport
ScottR400D
Bearing in mind that Caterham no longer recommend Comma, perhaps since Millers sponsored some of the Caterham Chanpionships. Millers are the new Caterham recommendation, XFS 5/50 for the track and XF5/30 on road. I've been using Millers Nanodrive CFS 5/40 NT for a year or so. It was recommended to me by Opie as follows:"The engine oil is less straightforward. I wouldn't use a 5w-50, it's too thick, but it's what Caterham recommend. The standard grade for a Duratec is 5w-30, but it's running more power and getting harder use in a Caterham, so a little thicker makes sense. The shape of a Caterham leads to good air cooling, so I would go for a 5w-40."I'm sure any decent 5/40 or 50 would be fine as long as it's changed regularly. Wrightpayne
I've mostly used halfords synthetic 5w/40 and occasional 5w50 in my 1.6k, purported to be made by comma. Always had good oil pressure with both on road and track. Usually purchased when on offer and changed annually < 1000 miles p.a.Ian

John Vine
Bearing in mind that Caterham no longer recommend Comma...But that sounds like a commercial decision rather than a technical one? I hope so as I've loads of Comma oils on my garage shelf. ...halfords synthetic 5w/40 and occasional 5w50 in my 1.6k, purported to be made by comma...Indeed, I believe it is. At least, the tech help number on the side of the can is the same as Comma's.Personally, I always used Caterham Motorsport (Comma) 5W-50 in my 1.8K SS-R (non-VVC), and I use either 5W-50 or 5W-40 (both Comma) in my R400D. Agree with SM25T that the correct grade for a K VVC is 10W-40 as that's what the VVC mechs require.(Edited to correct my 5W grade error.)JV
ScottR400D
John, I'm sure it was a purely commercial decision. I alluded to that by mentioning Millers' sponsorship and my comment about any decent oil of the right grade being OK.
SM25T
10W-40 for the VVC.

anthonym
arrgh, me too, piles of Comma 5w50 stocked here. For years I used Mobile 1 5w50 as recommended by Minister for my R500K engine. When I have enquired why the 5 in 5w50 I have been told that it means when cold starting the oil goes where desired, more quickly because it is thinner, and that the 50 means it doesn't break down (so quick) when thrashed (after proper warm up) and/or running hot for hours and hours.
