Refurbishing wheels

Whilst the specialist wheel restorers undeniably do a damn good job, the cost is too high a percentage of a new rim for small wheels. So I want to DIY, but need one of those wheel lathe things. Just something to spin the wheel up so I can take a file to the dings on the rim edge, and emery cloth to the tyre seat before I shotblast and respray them. Since the metalworking lathe I have access to hasn't got the capacity, I have been considering such hairbrained schemes as making a wheel lathe from a hoover motor, to jacking up one of my rear wheels and have the engine idling in gear.

Anyone got a better suggestion before I have a go at maiming myself?

Capital Idea the Jacked up car thing!

I have some crumbly old Soft Reds round here Luke would you like me to bring em over? You could save on the cost of Axle Stands too!

Also for extra Rim speed if you have no Slip Diff I could occasionally grab one wheel on the back Axle for the Diff Effect! Thinking safety I have some old cushions we can put at the end of the garage...sorted

Joking aside though Luke your plan could have real harmful side effects. I guarantee you will emerge from the garage with a black face and hands and with polish splattered all up the walls.

I might be!

To be truthful I have refurbished some polished Rim wheels and it was an ******** job.

I filed and smoothed any scrapes and dings then Nitromorsed off only the Rim Lacquer before spending ages with an M&P polishing kit to buff out the surface corrosion then re finished with lacquer.

Lovely result but as these are now only Track Day rims I might as well have just painted them silver or black *biggrin*

So it's the hoover motor then Steve? I was hoping you weren't going to say that, as a round thing doesn't hold very well in the vice. I'll have to use the workmate instead.

As it happens, posting this thread prompted me to do a bit of deeper research, and it looks like there's a mobile refurbisher not too far from here. If he'll undertake the job of just fixing the dings for cheaper than a full respray, that may well be the best route.
