def843t
I,ve had continuing problems with starter motors since buying my 1800 xflow 2 years ago, having replaced it at least 4 times with Lucas reconditioned units. They seem to jam regularly and eventually pack up alltogether. Is it possible that I have a mismatch with the ring-gear and the motor gear. I have the 3 bolt inertia type at the moment. Is it possible to change to a pre-engaged stater. If so how big a job would it be ? Thanks in advance Brendan
Joe 90
The inertia type mates with a 120 tooth starter gear and the pre-engage types mesh with a 132 tooth starter gear, so you have to change the starter and flywheel together 🙆🏻. On the plus side, I don't think I've ever had any problems with the pre-engage type
Fast Westie
Oliver You say that one has to change both ring gear and flywheel when swapping starters. Is this because the inside diameter of the ring gear changes? Also, do you have any part numbers? Many thanks The car in front is a Westfie1d
def843t
Oliver, Thanks for the reply, but I dont understand why I would have to change both. Changing the motor to suite the ring gear would be be the simplest option if it was possible ? Brendan
allen
Brendan, It is possible that you have the wrong ring gear fitted for the inertia starter motor. However, it is perhaps more likely that you have a badly worn ring gear. Count the number of teeth to find out - plugs out, starter off, get an assistant to revolve the engine from TDC mark through 360% back to TDC - mark the first tooth on the ring gear with tipex and stop counting when you get round to it again. Casbar
I changed to pre-engaged about 3 years ago. Easy swap and a lot better. i got my motor from James Whitting, but its a lucas one. My flywheel has 110 teeth.
