Speed sensor gap

OK, all set for Brands Hatch track day tomorrow. But, a new new speedo sensor was fitted last week and it isn't working. I backed the sensor off a bit (it was very small) and increased the gap to about 1.5mm (by eye) and it burst into life. However, above 50mph, it now drops to zero. So, assuming the earth and similar are OK, should I:
A - Increase the gap?
B - Decrease the gap?
Answers on a postcard, please!

Thanks for your comments, folks. I didn't get much of a chance to look at the speedo yesterday which, apart from being a trifle crowded on track, was a great day! The bracket is new (from CC, the last one had broken where the rear ARB connects, which was the cause of the issue). The earth isn't the issue. I will fiddle with the gap as soon as I have a moment.
