O/T - engine tuning

Non-7 related engine tuning question.

A (female) friend of mine received a an e-mail from a someone who is currently tuning his RX7 rotary engine. He was sarcastically asking her if she could solve a problem he currently has. She would love to give him a sensible answer, if anyone has got one, to suitably amaze him. I'm not at all familiar myself with engine tuning, so I'd be very grateful for not getting complete bull**** answers *smile* *wink* *tongue*. She'd never forgive me!

Here's his email:

On my car I have retarded the leading and trailing rotor by 4 degrees and

richen up the maps by 10%. I am getting knock readings of up to 129

directly after deceleration after WOT normally above 5 grand. I have

changed the plugs to HKS FR55E and still no improvement. My alcohol water

injection isn't hooked up at the moment but that would just be masking the

problem. My only choice is to revert to the PowerFC stock maps which may

make things worse.

Anyone got any clues?

Many thanks

Martin

Jesus, that's really techy. If you are looking for a smart comment which can hint at deep knowledge you could suggest she asks him how much power he is looking for at what rpm and whether that won't give him excessive rotor tip wear, resulting in low compression and exhaust blowby, as she's not an expert in rotaries but she has heard that this can be a problem. Shortly after this she needs to make a sharp exit before he establishes that she is bulls**ting. It's a high risk startegy but it might work if she has enough basic mechanical knowledge and the nouse to pull it off.

Good luck, it sounds like fun!

Mark - thanks

Tell him he might get some work out of it in the end, if the reply is suitably good - this guy has apparently been looking for a specialist, and I don't think Newbury is too far away for him (once he's got the car running properly). I'm told the car's been heavily modified, and will continue to be.

Must try to blag a drive in it....... *tongue*

I sacked him but then I realised he wouldn't give us the answer so I reinstated him *smile* I'm off to Austria so won't be around to relay the answer, can you drop him an e-mail to david@viewdata.co.uk and he can then send you the reply

His brothers Company by the way is Hayward Rotary Engines

cheers

With very limited info you can infer that:

1. It's a turbo, probably turbo II

2. It appears to have been modified by someone with more money than understanding of what they are playing with

3. No details are given on the rest of the setup

Sooo. He's going along at full boost (possibly 12-14PSI if modified) and lifts off. Fuel will be cut, dump valve will twitter away and then he plants the throttle again, possibly before the turbo has slowed down significantly, which will give a huge boost spike.

However, adding fuel AND retarding without understanding where you are to start with is generally known in the trade as anti-lag. So the poor turbo will be being hit with very hot and still combusting exhaust, upping boost further.

Without some logs to look at, I would be tempted to leave spark alone and put a bit accel shot in.

He needs to get it to a garage for everyones safety.
