BenF
Hello all,On my first blat of the year this weekend, I noticed in the direct sun, how my windscreen is peppered with tiny chips - the kind which don't cause any crack but make visibility worse. Now this is on a Cayman rather than a 7, but I saw similar problem with 7s and wondered if anyone had any luck doing some light polishing. My plan was to clean the windscreen and then use a clay bar to get rid of anything stuck to it, not sure whether I can do anything else for it. Any tips?Ben
Member Jonathan Kay Posted March 26, 2017 Member Share Posted March 26, 2017 I'm impressed with the quality of repair with polymer that's now possible for roundish defects. Rain-X make something that they suggest might help with multiple small cracks. Haven't tried it.Jonathan
Mort
Our resident expert suggested cleaning the windscreen with toothpaste and a sponge.
tangomikeromeo
Furniture polish works wonders on the sides screens but never tried it on the main screen. Maybe worth a go?Hope all good out there with you Ben!
Member Jonathan Kay Posted March 28, 2017 Member Share Posted March 28, 2017 Toothpaste is a very useful mild abrasive. As is liquid Brasso (not the wadding) which adds a bit of solvent effect. You can get very good results on plastic with either. Usual precautions: try it somewhere that it doesn't matter.Jonathan

Bricol
Problem is the seven screen gets peppered with tiny stones as there's no nice smooth air flow up and over. Those chipp are small in diameter but relatively deep - polishing doesn't do much for most of them.Only way I found is a new one . . . just don't look too closely at it a year later . . . looks almost as bad as the original 11yr old one . . . TomB
If you bought an old one, could you fit some sort of film like the GP drivers have on their visors, then periodically remove it? Probably wouldn't be optically satisfactory though.
Wrightpayne
I wondered whether clear araldite could be used to fill pepper marks?Ian
SM25T
It's not that clear when it comes to vision through it.
Member Jonathan Kay Posted March 29, 2017 Member Share Posted March 29, 2017 Apart from the optical distortion I don't know a suitable film that would take enough energy out of a flying stone, because it wouldn't be allowed to deform.Jonathan
Member Jonathan Kay Posted March 29, 2017 Member Share Posted March 29, 2017 Does anyone know the composition of the "resin" used for commercial repairs?JonathanPS: If were trying Araldite I'd test "Ceramic and glass" as well as "Clear": current range, but not as we know it. BenF
Guys... thanks for all the repliesMy first step is to give the screen a good clean and clay bar, then I will look at using some toothpaste on a small area.I always thought that it was mainly 7 screens that got peppered with tiny chips, it has been a learning experience to find the same happens on a Porsche.... Mark w
BenPorsche windscreens seem to be susceptible to this. My car is only 2.5 years old and the screen got so bad I ended up getting it changed . The "pits" were leaving streaks from the wipers when it rained . " fortunately " a large crack appeared around this time ................
elie boone
Why does Caterham do not offer this option ? at least the Academy/Graduates would benefit greatly and for sure cheaper than a new windscreen.http://ultimateauto.co.uk/windshieldprotectionfaqs.php
