Identity Crisis:

Hi

I have a '68 Series 2 and I'm trying to identify several of the major components.

The car has the narrow wings of a SII and what looks like a reinforced Standard axle [as per Tony Weale's book] but is there a part number hidden somewhere that will confirm this along with the ratios fitted inside?

Also the car currently has a Ford 1500 precrossflow engine but it's a 120E-6015 block rather than the 116E unit and may not be original ... I understand that the 120E was fitted with a high compression and a low compression head, does anyone know how to tell the difference?

And finally the gearbox; the remote housing has the 118E 7K006 B designation cast on it, but does this necessarily identify the box itself? Is there another number hidden on the box that I can't see with the unit still in the car?

Many thanks

Kevin

There would originally have been a metal tag under one of the bolts securing the gearbox top plate that could be interpreted by someone in the know to give the spec. If the box has been rebuilt this may have gone. I think you'll have to extract the diff and count the teeth to identify the axle ratio.

This may answer your engine block question

And the axle ratios from the very old Pink Book are as follows, if it's a Standard Truimph the ratio would be either 4.55:1, or 4.11:1.

Hope these are useful. Regards Nigel.
