Indicator, ignition light and oil pressure troubles!

Can anyone advise me on a little problem Im having with my 1.6 K Supersport

The indicators have stopped working

The 3 warning lights arent working (ignition, mainbeam etc)

The oil pressure gauge is absolutley 0 at idle and absolutley maxed out when driving at any rev range.

Anyone any thoughts, dodgy earth maybe??

So I can do my "doctor" bit to try and diagnose what's wrong, do you have the following info?

1. Got to ask it.... have you checked all the fuses? ... and a second time!!?

2. Have you tried pulling the connection off the oil pressure sender and seeing if this makes any difference as to whether the other things now work?

3. Do the indicators come on with the hazard switch? If yes, does the indicator light on the dash work then?

4. Are the warning lights the types built into the tacho... or separate? If the tacho, they share a common earth connection.

5. Disconnect the oil pressure sender wire. With the ignition on, the oil pressure gauge should read zero. Touch the lead to an earth and the gauge should read max. Is this happening? If yes, the gauge is probably OK and there may well be a fault with the oil pressure sender although I'm still trying to work out why this would affect the other things you mention.

If you can answer these questions and come back, I'll meantime get my thinking cap on further.

Cheers Chris,

I have my seven at work today so I will pop down at lunch and check a few things and get back to you.

I have checked the fuses once but will check again - as they are not labelled do you know which fuse the indicators are?

The indicator lights are separate to tacho.

I'm afraid I don't know which fuse it is on your car Gareth. On mine, indicators are number 12 counting from the top (10 Amp). [there are 14 fuses in total on mine]. It may well be totally different on yours - I have no way of knowing.

Q: is the panel illumination working when you turn on the side/head lights?

Can you check whether the dash lights for the indicators and mainbeam share a common earth connection with the oil pressure gauge.... if so, can you check the integrity of this connection and the integrity of the other connections to the oil pressure gauge.

You can check the oil pressure sender with a meter. Pull the connection off the sender and connect an ohm meter between the terminal on the sender and earth. It should read somewhere between about 3Kohms and 4 Kohms. If it's open or short circuit, you have a duff sender, but I don't think this is the cause of your problems. But worth checking while you're at it.

The oil pressure gauge itself will have 3 connections (apart from the panel lamp). If you can take the gauge out (it has two handtight knurled nuts at the back) disconnect the plug that goes to it and measure the resistance between the 3 terminals (ie: if we call them A,B & C, measure A to B, B to C and A to C. The two smaller resistances you measure should add up to the larger one. I don't know exactly what the values should be, but knowing the oil pressure sender is around 3.5 Kohms, I would estimate that the resistances you measure at the gauge will be of the order of 450 ohms, 800 ohms and their total (1250 ohms). The actual values may be different but shouldn't be something weird like hugely high or zero.

After switching the hazard warning switch on and off a good 10 times - the indicators are back working again *wink*

The oil pressure is still like watching the rev counter though *mad* - I will check sender unit at the weekend.

The only warning light that isnt working now is the red ignition/stall light but will check the connection at the weekend.

Thanks for all the help - I just need to re-bush all the front end after blasting and powder coating the wishbones get the TSK respray and switch the LSD from 4.11 to 3.92 now ☹️

Its all good fun.... *thumbup*
