Petty strut

Hi all,

I fitted the FIA Trackday bar (79032U with two diagonals) to my Imperial S3, no problem. I have the Petty Strut (79048, the one piece version) to do now but was trying to figure out if there's a special fixing for the curved bracket where it bolts through the rollover bar, or just a regular bolt and nut?

Any ideas?

Any photos of where the bottom end of the strut bolts to the chassis?

Thanks, Roger

Hi Roger, the fixings through the  roll hoop are bolts with nylock nuts which come as a kit from Caterham or use any suitable alternative, with regard to the bottom of the strut it fixes into a tapped bush on the chassis which needs to be exposed by drilling out the rivets on the side panel to give you a fix for the pilot hole. There are instructions in the build manual which give a bit of a guide. Any problems mail me and I can get a picture off to you.

Thanks Dave, I thought there might be some shaped washer to fit the bar but just a straight bolt and nyloc makes life easier as I have plenty of those.

One gripe I've got with the Caterham parts website is they don't say "you might need this fitting kit". I suppose I should have learnt when the roll over bar arrived only to realise I had to order the slim headed bolt for the bottom fixing.

C'est la vie!

Success! I located the bottom mount, I found a photo of a bare chassis which helped a great deal.

Here's what it looks like from inside. OK so it was the second hole I drilled.

Managed to get a bolt screwed in

Now the interesting bit. Dry fitted the bottom bolt and the strut is about 15mm short of the roll cage.

Is that normal? Is the strut too short? Can you lean on the rollover bar when it's tightly bolted on to make it fit? Will the chassis bend enough?

What's other people's experience?

Cheers,

Roger

There are often complaints that the information on stock isn't accurate. Similarly for fasteners and other bits I'd recommend emailing (or even 'phoning) to check that you're ordering everything that you need. Hindsight, eh? :-)
