ECR
What axle was fitted to this car ? I think there may be a changeover in this year, if so what are the identifying itemsTIA
Member Jonathan Kay Posted November 8, 2016 Member Share Posted November 8, 2016 Coulter says the Standard axle wasn't changed in the revisions for the 1962 Motor Show. And then there was a supply route through Caterham Cars to Lotus after Standard stopped using them. Doesn't say when the reinforcing plate was introduced. The Ford Escort axle then came in with the S3.Weale agrees, and adds that the reinforcing was developed by Caterham and added in 1967.Jonathan
Burwell7man
I believe the standard 10 axle was fitted to all road going UK & USA S2's, but contact John Watson (L7 Register) for a fully warranted answer. The standard 10 axles are around 6 inches narrower than the escort axles as used on the S3 and reinforcing was introduced sometime between 62 and 64. I haven't ever seen an S2 without some form of it.Some racing S2's had a de-dion axle and independent suspension akin to that on the Lotus 6..Richard
ECR
Is the reinforcing plate only used on the Standard Motors axle ?
Expat
I built (assembled, it was much simpler in those days) my second Lotus 7 S2 in 1966. The back axle certainly didn't have a reinforcing plate. The dome shaped diff. cover developed the expected crack and the subsequent oil leak entailed changing the A frame to axle bushes every few months. So I sold it and bought something with "doors and a heater" to quote SWMBO (and we weren't even married then!).Who made the axle? Standard AFAIK. For a definitive answer ask John Watson.
Member Jonathan Kay Posted November 9, 2016 Member Share Posted November 9, 2016 The Standard axle came from the Companion.http://www.britsportofseattle.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/DSC00140.JPGI don't know who made them.Jonathan

Burwell7man
The Standard 10 (or companion) axle seals were supplied to me from Redline Components a number of years ago. There is an inner and outer, which would be worthwhile replacing both at the same time.Richard
