Sardean
My 7 (VHPD K series) seems to have what sounds like a slightly noisy tappet, is there a guide anywhere on how to check the valve clearances and if necessary adjust the shimming? Any help gratefully received!?Dean

Jonathan Kay
I've got the Rover manual and an Elise manual: send me a Private Mail with your email address if you'd like them.Have you checked DVA's site?Jonathan

revilla
If it's a VHPD on solid lifters, shimming is quite an involved process I think. There are no adjusters, the shims fit inside the valve lifters so to change them involves removing the cam ladder and cams to allow the lifters to be withdrawn. This also means timing belt off and resealing everything and redoing the timing on reassembly so it quickly gets very involved. To be honest if it's on hydraulic lifters there is again no adjustment and if one has gone faulty it's pretty much the same story.
Englishmaninwales
The simplest starting point is to remove the cam cover and measure the cam follower clearances. The engine can be turned with a socket on the crank pulley bolt, with the spark plugs out. Using a set of feeler gauges measure the gap between each cam heel to follower, ensuring the cam lobe is at 180 degrees to the follower. This will tell you whether you have a significant problem or not. A very small excess of clearance over target, causing the slight noise, need not necessarily be attended to at present. Too small a clearance is much more risky, as can result in valve damage.VHPD follower clearances, cold, are 8 thou (0.20mm) inlet and 10 thou (0.25 mm) exhaust.Malcolm
