Smithy77
Newbie to trackdays - wondering if anybody happens to have an airbox and/or dB slayer (tail pipe attachment) I might be able to burrow for my first trackday at Castle Combe on 10/10? Driveby limit is 87db/static 100db and I have an R400 K on roller barrels with 230bhp and I'm concerned it will be too loud.I don't want my first trackday to end in disappointment, but if I go armed with an airbox/dB slayer, at least I should be able run for the whole day and I'll then know if it is something I'll have to address over winter. Thanks in advance for any assistance
Dave J
what exhaust ?and is the filter inside the bonnet or poking through ?
Member Jonathan Kay Posted September 30, 2016 Member Share Posted September 30, 2016 If you can't get the bits would you be able to go before the day and ask the testers to check your current set-up? That will only work for the test in the paddock, but they're very experienced and mostly enthusiasts. Probably best after the initial queue in the morning.Jonathan
Smithy77
Dave, it a standard VHPD 4-2-1 race system, without cat and 24x6" Powerspeed can, repacked by myself with acoustafil only recently.Air filter is within the bonnet but I have an open air duct/scoop on the side.Jonathan, good suggestion. Fortunately, I live round the corner from Superwhite who has a decent dB meter, so I'm going to test the static noise this weekend.
Paul Deslandes
You can buy additional exhaust cans from Merlin on site but, if you do, make sure that you fit it properly as the outfield of Castle Combe is littered with them at the end of a track day. I suspect that Merlin drive round after everyone has gone home and pick them up, quick repaint and back on sale. From what I remember I don't think your car was too noisy and should get through the static noise test okay. For driveby, find out where the infield mics are and lift off if you have a problem. The driveby tends to be intake noise rather than exhaust triggered with your inlet side on the inside of the track.Good luckPaul
Smithy77
Paul, do you mean the little tail pipe attachments? Certainly a good option. Also, you didn't hear it at WOT! Quite frankly, it is ridiculously loud
Smithy77
I got the dB limits in a muddle in my original post. Now corrected
John_C
Can you get to Goodwood on a weekday ? when they are running a track day they will noise test your car.
Dobson_justin
I had the same concerns for my car on first track day, so if you have an iPhone, download a sound meter app, and use that to give you a guide as to whether you are in the right area. It is not perfect, but worked very well for me, and was pretty close to the reading on the day.
Smithy77
Tested the car with a mates sound meter, known to be very accurate. Peak of 95db at 4500rpm and 97db at 5000rpm - looks like I might be OK (for static at least).
Member Jonathan Kay Posted October 3, 2016 Member Share Posted October 3, 2016 Well done... did you compare the reading on an app on a smart 'phone with the dedicated meter?Jonathan
