Go4it1011
Anyone know of a decent garage or mechanic in the Bayonne area of France? On holiday and have no break lights working. Fuses seem ok have no meter so can't test the connection in the peddle box but it is definitely making a contact with the switch. Was told to go to the local village garage where the owner took one look at the car and firmly said NON! Then when i asked is there anywhere else that might help gave me that gesture that drives me mad - the Classic French shrug of the shoulders!!! (God I hate that)Found another Garage and this one took a bulb out, looked at it for a while, put a new one in and then said NON!I was definitely an "Inny" at the Referendum but I am rapidly changing my mind.Any advice or address of a Garage especially if they speak English would be most appreciated. Member Jonathan Kay Posted September 8, 2016 Member Share Posted September 8, 2016 If it isn't the fuse the next most fixable thing is the switch.Do the lights come on when you short the connections by hand?Jonathan
Go4it1011
Will try that tomorrow thanks
Member Jonathan Kay Posted September 8, 2016 Member Share Posted September 8, 2016 There's at least one Mr Bricolage in Bayonne, and they sell multimètres.JonathanPS: Don't take the switch apart before checking the archives: there's a spring that might make a dash pour la liberté. Area Representative Paul Richards Posted September 8, 2016 Area Representative Share Posted September 8, 2016 If you dismantle the switch (I'd put money on it being the culprit) do so in a plastic bag to stop the spring flying about.
SM25T
Remove pedal box cover. Check bracket is in contact with plunger of brake light switch. If it has turned ... reposition it and secure. Otherwise. .. carefully prise the end cap off the brake light switch with a thin flat screwdriver. The spring is only like a biro spring. It isn't that ferocious. Just be careful. You'll find a u-shape metal contact that slides out. Wipe greasy crud off contacts and squeeze the little middle lugs together so that they actually touch the contact inside the switch. Reassemble ... noting spring only goes one way round.

Go4it1011
Thanks so much SM25T.Sorted thanks to your easy to follow instructions.Off now to pull up outside the two useless French Garages just to point at my dazzling brake lights. SM25T
Good news. Now you have the knowledge and the confidence .... you can pass it on to others. It is needed fairly often ... until you change to the nice sealed brake light switch from Car Builder Solutions ..... then maintenance free ! Only about £9. JNC
The only problem with CBS switch is it's shorter than the Intermotor CC switch so you need to bend the metal pusher on the pedal . Not hard to do just be prepared .
John Vine
...nice sealed brake light switch from Car Builder Solutions...That's a good idea. Can you post a link, Ian? I've searched their site without success.JV
JNC
@ JV , I also could not find the switch on CBS site so I trawled through eBay found a switch, checked feed back before purchase only to find the seller was CBS on line !.
SM25T
It's a stop light switch ... Not a brake light switch it seems. See http://www.carbuildersolutions.com/uk/mechanical-stop-light-switch
