Avon zzs

Hi all

Has anyone had balancing problems with

Avon zzs 185 55 r13 tyres ?

I bought a pair from Caterham and they were fitted just two days Before a trip to scotland.

Once onto the motorway I had an obvious balance problem,

So found a tyre shop and had them re- balanced,

Still not good, so the trip was done with wobbly tyres.

Have fitted a replacement pair and all is fine.

I am about to return the dodgy pair to Caterham at the request of Avon tyres.

Has anyone had this problem ?

sorry its been a while but....

tyres went back to avon via caterham and were checked

they were returned with a test note saying they are ok,

but need 35 & 40 grams of weight, this seems a lot

but if it does the trick so be it

they will be refitted when i have worn out the set  i bought

as replacements....so we will see.

as the original were fitted by a specialist on the top machine (same as avon use)

i think there will be a further problem, but caterham have offered to fit & balance them

at no cost to me.....so thats where they will go then

I had balance problems with both CR500s and ZZSs on 13" Superlights. Having read here that the centre hole is not always perfectly central on these wheels I had them balanced using a tool which is bolted to the wheel using all 4 studs and then mounted on the balancing machine. I was told that this is the way some Peugeot wheels are done as they don't have central holes. The result was a significant improvement.

What alcal is referring to is a flange plate mounting. Has to be used with close centre wheels such as the French used to use a lot and can be advantageous when the wheel locates on the car by the studs rather than the central spigot, which most cars do to some extent.

Having said that, I have two sets of Apollos, one with CR500s and one with ZZRs and they located pretty accurately on a back cone. (I have my own changer and balancer)
