graham b
Hi all Has anyone had balancing problems with Avon zzs 185 55 r13 tyres ? I bought a pair from Caterham and they were fitted just two days Before a trip to scotland. Once onto the motorway I had an obvious balance problem, So found a tyre shop and had them re- balanced, Still not good, so the trip was done with wobbly tyres. Have fitted a replacement pair and all is fine. I am about to return the dodgy pair to Caterham at the request of Avon tyres. Has anyone had this problem ? graham b
And what did you do about it . ? Return them ? Scrap them ?
ballisticsupersport
I had the same problem, got my local tyre fitter to fit and balance them and had horrible vibration through the steering. Got them re-balanced by a specialist, they had to use a lot of weight though.
Gregs79
I have an issue where I had to have them balanced with lots of weights as well!
graham b
Avon want to know about this issue. And will sort it with a credit for replacement tyres

graham b
As of now tyres are with c/ cars crawley who have promised to issue a credit note ( I could have had replacement tyres) Without waiting for Avon to examine the faulty ones. Result.
Area Representative Golf Juliet Tango Posted August 23, 2016 Area Representative Share Posted August 23, 2016 Good result but quite right. Your contract is with Caterham Cars. If the tyres are not fit to use, swap or refund (I think you may insist on a refund not a credit note). It is up to them to get replacements from Avon. ballisticsupersport
This begs the question, what is considered to be an acceptable amount of weight to balance the wheels? What is the criteria for CC/Avon replacing the tyres or issuing a refund? graham b
sorry its been a while but....tyres went back to avon via caterham and were checkedthey were returned with a test note saying they are ok,but need 35 & 40 grams of weight, this seems a lotbut if it does the trick so be itthey will be refitted when i have worn out the set i boughtas replacements....so we will see.as the original were fitted by a specialist on the top machine (same as avon use)i think there will be a further problem, but caterham have offered to fit & balance themat no cost to me.....so thats where they will go then
alcal
I had balance problems with both CR500s and ZZSs on 13" Superlights. Having read here that the centre hole is not always perfectly central on these wheels I had them balanced using a tool which is bolted to the wheel using all 4 studs and then mounted on the balancing machine. I was told that this is the way some Peugeot wheels are done as they don't have central holes. The result was a significant improvement.
ScottR400D
What alcal is referring to is a flange plate mounting. Has to be used with close centre wheels such as the French used to use a lot and can be advantageous when the wheel locates on the car by the studs rather than the central spigot, which most cars do to some extent.Having said that, I have two sets of Apollos, one with CR500s and one with ZZRs and they located pretty accurately on a back cone. (I have my own changer and balancer)
