Thread sealant - what to use?

I'm in the process of replacing a damaged oil pressure and oil filter housing and looking to add the mechanical type which is available from 'think autos'.

I've seen people recommend a product called blue hermotite. I can't see this product for sale anywhere. I've seen red which has now been renamed. So I'm looking for some suggestions as to what product to use.

Many thanks.

Don't use hylomar blue on threads it is non setting and won't effectively seal the thread against pressurised oil. As stated above use Loctite 243 or equivalent. The oil filter housing gasket should go on dry, if you must then a light smear of hylomar blue on the faces.

Oily

Actually, if it's for hydraulic sealing rather than actual thread locking, I'd go for one of Loctite's hydraulic sealants. These seal better than thread locker and are easier to dismantle. Something like Loctite 577 would be ideal, although be aware that it only works on metal to metal joints.

If you are thinking of using Blue Hylomar, can I suggest you try using a chocolate tea pot first? It is completely the wrong application for this product.
