VX1600 Brake binding

I have recently recommissioned my VX1600 following illness.  I use a caterham friendly MOT test station and they mentioned the front brakes are binding.  I've been out today and it is worse than I thought.

The pads can be removed with persuasion but the pistons in the calipers are reluctant to move. Is there anyway of servicing the pistons or do I just replace the calipers?

If its the latter, then has anyone a cheaper alternative than Caterham.  They are charging 250 each side.

Any advice appreciated

I have an 1800 vx 8 valve and its a spitfire setup with girling calipers..you might get a piston service kit but if the pistons and bore are corroded (pitted) your wasting your time as a service kit used to be dust boot and seal only.. So you would need complete calipers if there badly corroded..try rimmer Bros they deal in Triumph spitfire parts .. What I personally would do if it was my car is strip down the calipers to take a look at the condition if it looks ok refit after a clean up. But if the boots are split you will need to replace them as brake dust gets in and jams up the Pistons.

what year is your Caterham ?

Thanks John,

That's really helpful.  The car was built in May 99.  I've owned it since spring 2000.  What year is your one?  I've had great with it although I've never been brave enough to venture abroad.

I'll remove the caliper and take a look at the rubber.  Is it obvious how to strip it when I take a look?

Hi Paul

Best of luck with the brakes.

We took our 1800 8v to the L7 Italy meet at Portofino last year.  It suffered a broken spigot bearing which made changing gear difficult.  Am hoping it'll be trouble free when we head back down next month.

Main problem is lack of luggage space in a live axle car.
