HPC BDR

I viewed this BDR at 7s and Classics and I just had to buy it.  Its absolutely spectacular! It changed hands for the first time since 1989 in 2014 and although that seemed like a bargain by today's prices , an equally fastidious buyer, with an epic collection of classics, went to town re-commissioning it no expense spared, (despite only 197 miles on the clock in 2014) that involved - engine out for inspection a re-commissioning on the bench, full re-spray of body in original colour while the engine was out (to freshen up 'patina'ed' paint work from 26 years in dry storage), all belts, hoses, fluids and consumables replaced and a few areas improved and upgraded but in original '80s period style.

Yes I've had to pay and extra £10k for the privilege over the 2014 sale price but I soon concluded this car is absolutely worth it it is definitely the best BDR out there and a lovely collectors piece - true concourse condition (it sits in any showroom as a brand new 1989 car).  It reminds me of my first Supersprint to drive,  The car is very characterful to drive and a lovely relic. and is very much the last of the tuned 'old school' Ford sevens (pre VX and K which were the stepping stones the modern day Ford cars and metric chassis that we know today), so it has a great classic car drive and feel to it today.

I've got it back to my storage facility (still with under 500 miles on the clock) where it will be run in gently over the next couple of summer's, polished and fettled for another 25 years hopefully.  Photos to follow - when I've got it lined up with my JPE and my brother's mk.1 Superlight (these were the 3 cars that were most significant to my brother and I when we got into Sevens in the 90's).

All I want to add to this collection in the next few years is a Series 2 pre-crossflow Cosworth Lotus 7 and the line up of classic sevens is complete for me then (that will be quite costly so I will have to start saving up again, and might consider a basket case Lotus to restore, but an S2 restored to the standard of this BDR would be a dream come true).

Thanks for your input above and your comments around the BDR 7, always good to see.

Thanks Nick and I know it can be interesting to hear what becomes of certain cars.

I admit it was a lot of money to pay for a late '80s 5 speed dedion (with a chassis otherwise just like my '84 live-axle 1700 Supersprint that I parted with over 16 years ago now), but it is a nice period piece. Even the paperwork was lovely, all the original brochures and hand written spec. and sales receipts (I recall it was £9600 or thereabouts as a brand new factory built car in 1989), even the HPC driving course certificate and paperwork is in there which all adds to the story.

I shouldn;t think (now its sold to me), I will be braking any rules by supply this link to the recent advert for anyone interested to see recent photos (although it looks even better close up than the photos give credit) as is often the case with snaps: http://www.sevensandclassics.com/showroom/caterham-7-hpc-1700-bdr/

That said I wouldn't actually mind my old A-plate red 4 speed liveaxle Supersprint on flared wings with what must have been the earliest black pack created (which worked quite well actually I remember stripping and satin black powder coating things like the tatty old painted headlight, stainless wing protectors, windscreen surround etc)... but you can't keep them all.

That said the BDR can stay exactly as it is and all I will be doing to it is: fitting an HPC badge to the front grill, sourcing 4 wheel centre badges and possibly chrome plating the roll bar (but I'm in undecided on that at the moment)

Was this the car that sat between a couple of Lamborginis in storage before it was sold in 2014? It certainly looks like that car? If so, it was offered at around £20k. Iirc both myself and Mike Culmer enquired about it. The vendor gave the impression of not wanting to sell it...

JPE No. 19....do I know you? Canterbury dweller?....

This was the same car.

It was advertised by Nick the owner in july 2015 for £32000 on pistonheads

.He then lowered the price to £29950.

He advertised it for £27950 about 3 weeks ago on Car and Classic.

He then sent it to Sevens and Classics and it was advertised at £24995.

I never saw this car advertised for £20k and i know Nick turned down an initial offer of £25000 in July 2015.

A black and ali BDR HPC with flares was sold by Steve Phillips Car Sales of Wigan was sold on Ebay in February 2015 for £27500.

I think Matthew has bagged himself a bargain!

With regards the price in 1988 my car with most of the option list ticked was £14400.

Just to give you an idea of how expensive these cars were - when introduced in 1986 they were £13384 . A whale tail 3dr Sierra Cosworth was £15950 in standard trim. Probably the reason why they only made 62 of the HPC BDR.

Thanks All - and yes indeed Matt Stears here.

Yes I have all the receipts with the car which is basically 1988 Caterham Cars new car sales receipt for circa £11k (yes a lot of money back then), and £15k 2 years ago which was an uber-bargain for a car that probably just needed light commissioning, registering and running in!  However the last owner went to town making it perfect and spent many man hours on it, and subjected it to an amazing array of work to make it better than new again all these years later.

Indeed I'm not surprised it was thought it could achieve £32k! it was so good I didn't quibble at 7s and Classics £25k asking as it wasn't going to sit around for long at that (as the owner needed a sale to fund another interesting project) - it really was a case of that age old phrase in the trade "First to See will Buy".  I also like to support 7s&Cs too - they have bought and sold several cars for me now, and its a great team at Falkham - all former Caterham staff that live and breath 7s and know the market well.

Thanks all for your words on this HPC BDR

Matt (Herne Bay, Kent)

PS Thanks also James (owner of another gorgeous BDR car BtW) for supplying me an original HPC grill badge received in the post this week - I will fit this as a finishing touch this weekend and £65 winging its way to NtL next week for it as requested (+£10er on top for yourself to cover you post and trouble).

Those of you that have seen the photos of my car will see the HPC badge had been fitted really neatly to the back of the car, so I didn't want to remove it, but I always remember seeing the HPC badge on the BDR grill - back in the day when the owner's completed the 'compulsory' handling course.  That is a finishing touch that will really make my day and complete this car a treat.

regards

M

Thanks Matt- glad the badge arrived safely and yes it will just finish your car off a treat. On the subject of the HPC grill badge I have for my badge a plastic cover which was issued with the badge which clips over so as to when another person might drive your car but has not completed the course they are prohibited from displaying the HPC logo - strange or what!

As your car and mine are only one digit apart in engine numbers and very close on the VIN I think you may find  that £11000 was after the £3000 deposit they took off you part way through the build. I stood on the 1986 motor show stand were the new HPC BDR was shown for the first time and picked up the leaflet which i can email you a copy of if you want ? It was true also that they would not sell you one until you had been on the course!

ps send me some photos of it and the JPE please

When you eventually 'see out' your collection with the S2 do please post some photos :)

I'd love a clamshelled BDR one day....but that car in yellow looks sublime. I think I might re-fit my original Skoda GKN alloys again having seen how good they look on yours. I like my prisoner alloys but your car shines on those....

Very nice and well done for buying a glorious bit of Seven history. Enjoy.

I'm not sure if the black car advertised is a factory BDR but it looks alright (although I never liked the big wheels, although they suited the Caterham 21 well, - 13,14,15" suit the seven best and are as big these should go IMO).  Black car is registered quite late if it is a BDR, and its not an HPC spec car, or certainly doesn't advertise to be. The chromed roll bar and wishbones work nicely to break up the black paint and trim though and it looks quite nicely presented.

Some were asking for pics of my BDR and JPE.  I don't have very good ones on my today but here are some samples - I will post more when I get them all lined up and polished up in the garage along with my bother's mk1 Superlight... it might be a while until I can afford to add a Lotus7 Series2 pre-xflow Cosworth to complete the collection.  On that note: - it was nice to see Caterham launched their modern day tribute to the S2 Seven (the new Seven Sprint) last week at Goodwood revival (as soon as I saw the Seven 160 a couple of years ago: I knew an S2 retro build with clams was the answer, and the new Seven Sprint is spot on.  I'm just waiting to see the first green and yellow one now)

Also below my JPE and photo of when I met Dr Palmer on the BMW stand at Goodwood this year :) - I would love to get JP or Jolyon to run it up the Goodwood hill one year, in future (I am working on getting a full JPE motorshow vinyl decal set made up in Flo yellow to make it more recognisable for such events in future, and might have to take the cage off at some point..... but I'm just enjoying it as it is for now as it is a well sorted road car running CSR wheels on ZZS tyres presently which work well, (as well as an original set of 15" Dymags on ZZR rubber in the garage to keep a period set of wheels for posterity).
