Quenton Fyfe
Just got a Caterham (Classic 1.6Vx) - (Hooray!) But I fear it's the start of lots of "newbie! questions while I get to know it (Boo!). Sorry! When out on a run, the temp gauge reads about 40 degrees - only rising a little when sitting idling. I've seen some discussion of this in the archives - so I know I could get a thermostat to make it run hotter. Question is - should I, or is it Ok to leave it the way it is? Seems to run fine (now I've tweaked the idle speed up to 900 to stop it stalling at junctions etc) - but is it causing engine wear due to oil not getting up to temp? Then again - if it's a problem, why do Caterham ship them without thermostats? Any advice welcome...
MikeW
Quenton, Firstly congratulations-you're in for a lot of fun 😬 😬 😬 I don't have a thermostat in mine and it definitely runs colder in the winter but I don't think it does any harm as the engine seems to get warm enough. I tend to leave mine running for a while sat on the drive to make sure things have warmed up ( you should find the fan kicks in after a while) before I go off. Ernie Panks
Ahh the lovely VX classic, well done, an excellent choice for your first 7. You may have a problem with the temperature sender, my VX ran at normal temps and after about a month from new, it wouldn't run above about 60 deg C Got a new temp sender fitted, job done.
