thompster
I replaced my perished exhaust bobbin with one from a local motor factors but 6 months on it looks as bad as the one it replaced. Is that to be expected or is there a better source I should use?
SM25T
Had to buy some more stock only yesterday after using my spare for a visitor. Got M8 industrial AV mounts 30mm diameter x 20mm thick ... from an eBay supplier. Cheaper than CC. Is there a problem with the alignment of your system to cause such a premature failure ? Stridey
I use skateboard bushings. The taller ones used for longboards and a bolt. They are made from urethane rather than rubber. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SABRE-KingCone-Truck-Bushings-Longboard-Skateboard-Downhill-86a-90a-93a/181460233342?_trksid=p2141725.c100338.m3726&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20150313114020%26meid%3Db1382168bd364ea48b2ec9e707325857%26pid%3D100338%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D10%26sd%3D221956635578
elie boone
These are really good http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p/exhaust-mounting-bobbin-5-16unf-esm1 i think they are also used on a BL Mini.
SM25T
Halfords sell those as Mini exhaust bobbins.
Mankee
Powerspeed do some serious-looking exhaust bobbins. I need to fit mine after I shredded the previous bobbins by clobbering the back of the silencer repeatedly at the bottom of Paddock Hill on Monday. Mark Durrant
I use one of these although I did need to drill the exhaust bracket to take the larger diameter.

Grandmaster Flatcap
I replaced my perished exhaust bobbin with one from a local motor factors but 6 months on it looks as bad as the one it replaced. Is that to be expected or is there a better source I should use?- You could say the bobbins were a load of old bobbins (Explanation for Southern folk what needs it)
Mechanical Moz
Recently fitted some poly bobbins to replace a pair of Halfords ones that lasted less than 2 years. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Classic-Mini-Polyflex-Exhaust-Bobbin-ORANGE-PAIR-GEX7251-mount-cotton-reel-MG-/191811497707?nav=SEARCHI think Minispares do black ones if the orange is not in keeping. There is a real problem with the quality of rubber components for classic cars at the moment, I've had steering rack boots that have split in just over a year and a vacuum pipe connector that hasn't lasted 8 months. Drumster
You can't beat a bit of overkill, I've had this one for the last 4 years
thompster
Thanks all for the links. I'd worry that polyurethane wouldn't have enough 'give' in it and would strain the exhaust but the machine mount links look good. Moz's comment about rubber products sounds familiar - I changed the steering rack gaiters for boxed and branded QH ones last year and they're already starting to go at the edge.Looking at the bobbins today they're quite bad so will be replacing before the LM classic. john milner
Black polyflex bobbins are now available from the same Ebay seller as the orange ones. £8 for two.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Classic-Mini-Polyflex-Exhaust-Bobbin-BLACK-PAIR-GEX7251-mount-cotton-reel-MG-/172269992531?hash=item281c177a53:g:NHsAAOSwRJ9Xg0anTried a Halfords last week and they no longer seem to stock bobbins. My last one from them only lasted two or three years so probably just as well.
Bricol
I was very careful to realign, slot, file, bend, adjust all my mounts to take and stress out of the bobbins as far as possible - ie it looks when installed, nice and straight, not angled between top and bottom, not in shear. I've got both mounts installed - front and rear of main silencer, Using a Powerspeed unit for the last 12 or so years.Think I've replaced one in 15yrs since build - lots of use in all weather, and lives outside most of the time.So on my sample of two - make sure you're not putting the bobbins under unnecessary loading for a good service life. ChristopheC
I replaced the exhaust bobbin with the "minispares" PU last year and it is still ok after 4000 miles and 2 track days
revilla
Given how cheap they are on eBay and how quick they are to change, I've just added "Replace exhaust bobbin" to my list of annual service tasks. And I make a point of checking it each time as I wash the car. Which does happen occasionally. Honest.
David Brown
Can anyone update if the poly flex bobbins last longer. Just fitted my spare (after a number of years) and saw these postings. Interested in the poly flex ones but it does warn about heat affecting the front mount on a mini.
Sooty
I put double poly bobbins on my front and rear exhaust mounts several years ago and not yet had to replace them. The old rubber ones lasted less than two years
Tony Whitley
I have replaced one rubber bobbin in a dozen years and 100,000 miles. As for Bricol above, it's never been a problem.
Jonathan Kay
The rubber originals on my 1998 K wore out in less than 3y. The rubber replacements have lasted longer than 17.JonathanPS: Also used on the Windcheetah in my profile photo...
7 wonders of the world
I changed to a bolt thro method on my previous car and use the same method on my current one - I run a long silencer and wanted additional security after having bobbins fail on my first K series car.Discussed here a while backhttps://www.lotus7.club/forum/techtalk/fail-safe-rear-exhaust-mount?page=
