Peter G
on my 2000 S3, pre mot fiddling has revealed only one of the two horns is working. I'm sure it'll be fine for the test, but are they different tones, or both the same weedy honk? Might go and get some noisy air horns in due course, but just wondering if anyone knows?Ta. Peter G
Well a bit more fiddling and I now have 2 horns, so all good, except the rivets on the drivers side floor have pulled through. Bugger.
Member Jonathan Kay Posted May 30, 2016 Member Share Posted May 30, 2016 Fixable with washers? But do the two horns sound the same? And what would be the best interval... a seventh?Jonathan
Peter G
Sounds like the same tone yo me, just louder! I was hoping it might play te opening bars to the 1812 overture, but no luck.I'll get mot garage to fix the floor (local Morgan dealer that also services various Lotus and Caterhams)

SM25T
Should be high and low notes. Adjustable with centre screw ? Twin air horns and compressor is the way forward.

john milner
After having a moron reverse into the side of a rear wing I fitted these http://www.carbuildersolutions.com/uk/twin-tone-electric-horns-chrome
TomB
Whereas Ive fitted these. Low cost, I think a Chinese copy of PIAA horns. Nice tone and loud - like a good tintop loud. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pair-Snail-Horn-Dual-Tone/dp/B00FCQHYR4
Member Jonathan Kay Posted May 31, 2016 Member Share Posted May 31, 2016 I couldn't find a link to the sound of those CBS horns. There's a great site somewhere with hundreds of horns with linked sounds. But how can we add lightness? What's the equivalent of lithium batteries or LEDs? How about those alarms used in domestic smoke detectors? They're loud, attention-catching and very light. (I have a friend with residual tinnitus from getting close enough to switch one off!)Jonathan
john milner
The CBS horns are loud but heavy. Smoke detector alarms while irritating will not travel far and will be mostly wiped out by engine noise. Generally low pitched sound travels further (e.g. coastal foghorns).
Member Jonathan Kay Posted June 3, 2016 Member Share Posted June 3, 2016 I'll have a look for low-pitched solid state noisemakers. For conventional designs I found these from e-Tech on Amazon UK: £19 with a mass of 2 x 195g. (Anyone ever weighed a factory horn?)Jonathan
John Vine
Bit of a thread resurrection, but I've just fitted a pair of the cheap-o horns mentioned in post #10 to replace the standard squawkers (one of which had failed anyway). At £8.80 the pair, they can almost be regarded as consumables, but they do produce a rich hi-lo duo-tone, just like a regular tintop. What's more. they are definitely LOUD, and IMO obviate the need for air-horns. The mounting terminal isn't an earth, so I needed to add earthing wires.ETA: The supplied mounting straps are feeble and far too thin to take the weight. I used the old straps instead.(Anyone ever weighed a factory horn?)Yes, 287g each. The replacements were 199g each.JV
