Smiffy
I'm about to take my first plunge into 7 ownership and having spoken to some owners, I think I know what I'm looking for . 175bhp+ Vx engined car for general weekend fun and the very occassional track day. Open minded on spec but prefer cycle wings. Not wanting to spend more than £15k. Anything out there or anyone thinking of selling ?
Rob Morris
Me.....! But not for £15k sorry. Cost me £25k to build, would talk around the £18k, very cheap for mint 190bhp Caterham. Just look at the price of a new SLR with all the gaer on......£? Don't think you'll find a better Vx for the money. Loved to death, just no time to use it so may as well sell it and let somebody else enjoy my labours.
Smiffy
Hi Rob Probably out of my price range but can you provide destails of spec, when built etc. Photo's would be great if you have any. John
EFA
Smiffy, Robs never used his car..... You won't find a newer looking example! VX prices are definately on the up - what with a JPE making £35k last week....... Avoid ex-race cars unless you want something scruffy that will take quite a lot of TLC. markdenton
Dear smiffy - might have what you're looking for...bit of a hybrid though but just superb - better give you the whole story though! Started life as a 1987 ford chassis although never completed or used- bought in 97 and chassis re-built by ARCH (original caterham chassis makers) to Vx spec (changed engine mounts etc.) Then built from ground up as if new kit (photo's available of build) by mechanical engineer. Obviously 'Q' plated, and run around for 3800 miles but still immaculate. I then brought it in 99 and proceeded to upgrade it, adding the big brake kit and having the donor engine rebuilt and stage one tuned (£6000) by recognised Vx specialist to include electronic ignition mapping. Now gives out 213 BHP! I also changed the clutch while it was out and changed the gearbox from the Quaiffe close ratio straight cut to a new sierra XR4 that doesn't whine (the first is a racing box that I will also sell with the car). I also uprated the suspension to Bilstein adjustables. All work has been done by Arrowstar racing of Oxford, recognised caterham experts, including a recent service and chassis touch-up. Everything else is pure HPC - she's in aluminium/british racing green, 16'' HPC wheels, full weather gear, MoMo steering wheel, leather racing bucket seats, FIA roll bar, 4 into 1 side exhaust. Never been on a track in her life, much loved and polished, and probably the most fun high spec Vx you can buy for £13500. If you fancy coming to have a look, i'll take you out for a spin. Selling as I'm a professional sailor and just about to embark on my next major sailing project. That's it! Kind regards - Mark

Area Representative Nick Chan Posted February 27, 2003 Area Representative Share Posted February 27, 2003 Smiffy, Sounds like you have got an absolute bargain if the spec is as good as Mark's and for £12k! Brilliant fun and the grins just get bigger.... 😬 Nick Yellow HPC - A 2.0 VX - 😬
Smiffy
Thanks Nick, I certainly hope so. Car seemed nicely put together and looked (and felt) to be in good order. I pick the car up next weekend and with a 3 hour drive back home along the M6, I'll hopfully still be wearing a grin when I get back. I'm already being bullied by a couple of owners into contracting the dreaded 'upgradeitis' but will do my best to stave off their attentions and hopefully just enjoy the car for a while
Area Representative Nick Chan Posted March 3, 2003 Area Representative Share Posted March 3, 2003 Smiffy, 3 hours on the M6 - don't forget those earplugs... 😳 As you are in Cheshire, do you get along to the MADS meeting? We'll see you there if you do. Have a good run up Nick Yellow HPC - A 2.0 VX - 😬
Clay Head
Bullied? John, we haven't started yet! By the time I've finished your car will weigh 800KGs and roll like a Renault Saffran. That should keep you off the tail of my xflow!
Smiffy
Nick, thanks for the reply ...... where / when do you guys have your meets? I'd be glad to speak to as many owners and like minded nutcases as possible. Trying my best to keep clayhead and Paul McKenzie off my case. Only had the bloody car 4 days and I've already been talked into some spare wheels/tyres and a new sump. If I come along, will you promise not to try to sell me anything ??!! You'll recognise me, my car weighs 800kgs and when I corner, my head scrapes the road !
Area Representative Nick Chan Posted March 11, 2003 Area Representative Share Posted March 11, 2003 Smiffy, MADS is last Wednesday in month over at Daresbury but the Cheshire meet is tomorrow night (Wednesday) at the Swan at Wybunbury - about 35-40 mins max from Chester and a decent run across - where there are around 10-12 owners with several sevens turning up as well. Well worth a jaunt over esp. to test out the new car again 😬 And "no" we won't try to sell you any upgrades (much) - despite me being talked into changing to my car at the very same place 😳 Hope to see you there Cheers Nick Yellow HPC - A 2.0 VX - 😬
