andy oliver
My road car is a Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 16v which weighs 1043kg and produces a massive 66bhp and 125nM of torque.Would it be capable of towing a Caterham on a trailer or do I need to trade it for some heavier metal? Mr Locust
You need to find out the maximum design weight for a braked trailer from your local Vauxhall agent. My local bods pulled the weight for the Omega out relatively quickly (1850kg I seem to recall). It's not going to be a ball of fire though! Silver 21
Andy Max tow weight for a corsa is between 750 & 1000kg across the range, I would suspect yours is at the lower end of this with the diesels at the top end. As a rough guide you should only tow to approx 85% of the max permisable tow weight to avoid 'tail wagging the dog syndrowm@ Caterham on even something like a minno is pushing 800 -850kg so not a good idea really, suggest you look for somthing bigger and more torquey Graham Competition Secretary Lydden, Curborough, MIRA, Llandow, Loton Park, Curborough, Aintree...What more can you ask for? stevefoster
Yes into struggling territory I think. My experiences:- My 150000 mile ZX 1.9D has a towing weight of 1100. To the 500kg+ car 370kg minno I add upto 6 spare wheels 40lts fuel, tools, mechanic, gear etc etc. It even towed an A series trailer and the 7 with all the above (well actually a much heavier mechanic that time ) without any problem. It all adds up. She doesn't go quickly up the hills... lorry speed but gets there and is happy at 60 on the flat / moderate inclines. I'd really like a Seat 1.9D turbo... Cor, I aim high huh.
