Fyldeflier
is it me or are these a bit more trouble than they are worth! The last few years I have always managed to loosen the old oil filter by wearing rubber gloves and turning by hand. Today though no chance...it wouldn't budge.Tried my chain wrench...hopeless I couldn't get it to stop slipping.Reverted to great big Phillips and great big hammer!!!....result. Took seconds ....good job I don't need the old filter though!John.
Member Jonathan Kay Posted December 20, 2015 Member Share Posted December 20, 2015 I've only ever used hands + rubber bands or the transversely positioned screwdriver.Jonathan
Tony Whitley
I have a strap wrench http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-RX1514?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=PLA&gclid=COqRkI_q6skCFUKeGwod6JQODQ that has served me reasonably well for the last <mumble> years. DJ.
I always use a chain wrench, they work much better if you keep the chain on the faceted surface at the end of the filter. Once it starts to dig in, there is no way it will slip. Duncan
Ozzy
Oily showed me a big spanner wrench which fits the hex section on the back of the filter. Must remember to buy one after my last escapade, which also resulted in the traditional screwdriver method, which although works every time, is a bit messy! SM25T
I have a big set of Footprint plier type things .... they work well, as you can move the pivot bolt so they open far enough to grip the outside of an oil filter.

thompster
I've had the halfords oil filter pliers for a few years, well worth twelve quid. Much less faff than a chain wrench and easier than bare hands. http://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/tools/hand-tools/halfords-oil-filter-pliers-300mm-
Dr Slotter
I use one of these Kennedy ratchet driven oil filter wrenches on my Duratec with a short filter (and several other cars/bikes):unless there is not enough space to fit a ratchet, such as on my 106 Rallye where there is a cross member in the way, where I too use the Halfords 300mm pliers.
