What will the new Tyre List changes mean to you?

Current Class 1 and 2 competitors will have nothing to worry about for 2016. There are no changes to any tyres that are commonly used in these Classes within our championship - but do please check that your tyres appear in the new List 1A section. Be aware that there are likely to be further changes in tyre regs over the next few years so, although we shouldn't try and predict the future, it would be better to make changes now that have a chance of still being viable in years to come.

Classes 3 to 6 - If we do nothing to our Class structure and maintain the road-going status, all cars must be fitted with List 1A or (new) List 1B tyres. (Effectively all the sticky soft compounds have been moved to List 1C) The new list effectively excludes all the tyres we have previously used. Even Medium compound Avon ZZR's. The only ZZR compound that will be eligible will be from code numbers ZZR (OE Fitments marked 15156 & 15157 only). All Kumho's will be excluded, as will Yokohama A21 etc. CR500 will be a list 1B tyre – as will the ZZS. So the chances are that you will have to buy new tyres if you want to continue competing in these Classes. List 1 B also allows pre 1990 cars to run ACB10 tyres - (this is being reviewed by the Regulations Committee and I suspect we will continue to exclude them, otherwise everyone will be looking for old cars to race).

Mod Prod - If you want to continue competing with your old List 1B tyres, which will be 1C now of course, you will have to go Mod Prod - Modified Specialist Production. But it will now be necessary to wear an FHR. (HANS or Simpson Hybrid). This will also apply to Class 7. In Mod Prod you must run an approved cage of which there are numerous options but, since our regs already require this, there are no additional implications. Also note that Mod Prod cars do not have to be road registered.

Please note that there are a couple of tyres on the List 1B that are being tested by other manufactures to ensure their conformity to the E markings. Comment from Simon- “I would not be buying a tyre in the softest compound that has "888" in its name just yet!”

This post is meant for information only and I hope that it clarifies the implications of the new rules and how they affect our current Classes. We are very interested in any proposals that suggest an alternative Class structure that would accommodate all tyre types - 1A, 1B & 1C. I would also appreciate it if you could separate your class structure proposals from any new scoring system suggestion - it would make life a lot simpler when it comes to voting.

Our interpretation of the Blue Book is that an FIA bar with petty strut fitted and, importantly, the manufacurers approval sticker/plate on it complies with mod prod rules.

Yes it would. However this may be something I can approach the current manufacturer about on our behalf if it becomes necessary.  I have a business relationship with them already so it would make sense.

I do not know what they would say though?

For mod prod - yes you need the sticker to be compliant. For road going it's not required.

The reason is that the neither the FIA bar nor any of the Caterham cages meet the basic material requirements in the Blue Book and therefore have to be manufacturer certified ROPS and this requires the sticker.

Hmm - I see trouble there.  No sticker on my tall FIA bar since I had it shot-blasted & resprayed black :-(

My sticker is on the petty strut, (thus applies to the whole structure when fitted) although I think I have a later one than yours.

In the event that a car is classed mod prod what cages are available to make a caterham compliant?

Is there a gap (gaping chasm) in the market?

i currently have a 1995 car with an OE roadsport cage. Unless OE equipment is accepted without the stamp it looks like there will be a lot of owners swapping roll cages in the next few months.

I better look in the piggy bank.

I have been in touch with Caged on behalf of the Speed Champs - it will save all you guys contacting them one by one.

Here is what you need to do.

Take Photos of the Roll bar or cage and car and print them out.  If you have a damaged sticker peel it off and stickit on some paper or card.

Send all of these to Dave Margetts,

with a stamped addressed envelope and Dave will send a replacement FOC.  Therefore PLEASE PLEASE do not forget the STAMPED and Addressed Envelope.

If you have the Roll Bar and Petty Strut with the X type bracing it will be a Caged product.  The single diagonal is Safety Devices.  The FIA Sticker should be on the Petty strut.

Caged began making the Roadsport Cages of the varrious designs about 10 years ago.  They will need pictures.

SLR Cages - again pictures please but they will be from around 10 years ago.

To avoid any duplication of effort, is anyone peoposing to try to make contact with Safety Devices?

After Simons excellent work with Caged I gave Safety Devices a call. It seems that for older cages it might be difficult as identification of a material change used on identical frames will be difficult to determine. However, the advice given to me was to first to inspect the cage for any identifying marks or stamps and then photograph the frame from several angles (preferably in Hi Def) and email them to motorsport@safetydevices.com. From the photographs they may be able to work out which cage it is identifiable a new homologation sticker. Could be issued. I didn't ask the question about the posting of the sticker. First things first, I need to find out if Safety devices can work out what I have.

A month ago I spoke to Safety Devices about my cage, which has a sticker that is faded beyond use.  I provided them with the serial number (it is behind the passenger dashboard mount and only accessable with the cage off the car) and suitable photographs of the cage.  After paying a fee they provided me with a replacement sticker.  Great service.
