MOT and number plates

My car is a 1988 Q reg 7 and has, until now run on standard reflective plates. Now fancy running it on black and white plates; the question is, is that legal?

I seem to recall reading on blatchat that MOT testers have to assume that all Q registered cars date back to the 70s (which indeed most crossglow engines will). Does that apply to number plates? And can we Q's run old style b&w plates legally?

Failing that, where can I get stick on reflective number plates in Gloucestershire?

Ta.

Andy,

Any vehicle manufactured before 1st January 1973 may legally display B&W number plates.

Vehicles manufactured after that must display the current style.

A friend of mine was taken to court over this a few years back but won his case because his june 1973 registered beetle was manufactured in 1972.

for more info look on WWW.DVLA.GOV.CO.UK and look at the number plate section.
