We are a group of five of five final-year mechanical engineering students at The Queens University of Belfast. We are currently undertaking a project to design a power unit for kit cars derived from two Kawasaki ZX 12-R motorcycle engines. This is a combined design and marketing project and the object is to produce a product that is ready for the market at the end of the academic year.

The Queen’s University of Belfast has an international reputation in the field of engine research and design and has for some years run it’s own Grand Prix motorcycle racing team.

We are currently at a stage where decisions have to be made on the final configuration of the engine. As potential customers for this type of equipment, we would value your opinions. We would be much obliged if you would take five minutes of your time to fill in the following questionnaire and

1. What type of kit car do you own?

 

2. What do you use your car for?

 

3. What is your estimated annual mileage?

 

4. What type of engine do you run?

 

5. Approximately how much power does your engine produce?

 

6. What is your estimated total expenditure on your engine (including all ancillaries but excluding clutch and gearbox)?

 

7. What is your estimated annual expenditure on engine spare parts?

 

8. Would a programmable Engine Management System be desirable or would you prefer to use a standard EMS?

 

9. Would you prefer to purchase a kit of components to build your own twin bike engine configuration or buy a ready built turnkey package?

 

10. How much would you be prepared to pay for twin bike engine derived V8 engine producing a minimum of 350bhp in: a) Kit Form?

b) Fully Built?

 

11. Do you have access to equipment for: Pipe Bending Drilling

Grinding Turning Welding Other (Please specify)

 

12. What gearbox and clutch would you prefer to use:

Donor gearbox and clutch from production car

Racing gearbox and clutch

 

13. Do you prefer an H-pattern or sequential gearbox?
