7 wonders of the world
Steve has at last had some alternate first gear ratios machined for his superb Tracsport gearkits,He currently has a batch of 10 up for grabs, well 9 actually ratios as follows:2.29, 1.61, 1.22, 1, and either .87 or .82 for fifthThe original 2.48 first is still available too for those of you wishing to tow a caravan...... cracking design, lightweight helical gears perfect for a 7.Give Steve a bell if your interested http://www.spcomponents.co.uk/gpage3.html
Grubbster
Blimey! I have the 2.482 and it's good for 60 in first! Obviously diff ratio is important to consider if picking a 2.29!
Area Representative Paul Richards Posted September 24, 2015 Area Representative Share Posted September 24, 2015 I think the standard type 9 is for those wishing to tow a caravan with holiday luggage. I have the 2.48 first and its fine. I just wish it wasn't so noisy.
paul jacobs
I've got a modified BH Geartec box on the back of my 2.3 Duratec which rattles and chatters on the overun between 3000 and 2000, do Steve Perks' boxes do the same?

7 wonders of the world
Suitable 'smilie' added after the caraven comment..........!2.48 is fine for getting an Escort off the line but is still too low for a 7, I had a 2.48 in both K and Duratec, then a 2.38 still the rpm drop was not ideal, this set gives a much better shift point / rpm drop.1-2 2485rpm2-3 2073rpm3-4 1576rpm4-5 1115rpm (0.87)1st becomes a useable ration and can be selected for tight corners around 40mph too.AFAIK BGH only offer at best a 2.66 1st which is way off, especially in a torquey 2.3 Duratec.Steve's invested in making these which makes him unique with the products he can now offer in terms of ratios, tooth profile and quality etc.
Paul Deslandes
It's been a couple of years since I built my box so I forget whether 1st can be changed from the present 2.48 simply by changing the 1st gear and individual countershaft gear, or does the whole countershaft cluster have to be replaced? Anyone know, and if so, the cost of the bits? If I've got an hour or two to spare I'll give Steve a call. With the 2.48 1st and 4.11 diff, my 2 litre Vx hits the 8k rev limiter before I can think, so 2.29 looks to make good sense, as does going back to a 3.92 diff. The old Quaife 2.04 1st was always just a bit too long so the new one could be a good compromise. These boxes are semi helical and, as such, are not as quiet as a standard factory built type 9. They are though a hell of a lot quieter than a straight cut box which will drown-out the noisiest diff.Paul
