Geoff Martin
I replaced this little gasket before for leaking, and it has started again*grumpy*All the mating surfaces are as clean as clean can be before refitting What, if any joining compound should be used? Sim
You need to make sure that when you attach the rail at the front, that you are not straining the rear connection and causing a leak round the gasket. You may need to pack the front connection with washer(s) to get the rear attachment flush Simon
Geoff Martin
Makes sense, thanks
Mankee
I used two gaskets and a dollop of flange sealant between it all. Also checked the alignment of the front mount as above and it has given me no issues after the spewing all the fresh coolant over the floor on initianl fill-up when I changed engines. Grubbster
Mine had a pin hole in the weld between pipe and flange, no amount of cleaning or new gaskets would have fixed it!
Geoff Martin
Checked the pipe and cannot see any holes. But I think im going to go down the double gasket & sealant route as per Mankee.
Englishmaninwales
Two potential causes of a persistently leaking coolant rail at the cylinder head end: Firstly the mating flange is not flat and secondly the fixing bolts may be too long. I had both at the same time!
6speedmanual
I second looking for the fixing bolt being too long. Packing with extra gaskets is not a good fix for this as the gaskets won't be clamped hard.
oilyhands
The fixing bolts are carried over from the donor engine which has a fitting with a 12mm flange, the water rail has a 5mm or so flange, trim the bolts a little, check when the two bolts are done up at the rear that the front fixing is hard up against the head where the front bolt sits, if not , pack the gap with washers so that the rail is not levered in as this can cause leave at the rear of the flange, ensure you use a quality gasket with a light trace of hylomar.Oily
7 wonders of the world
Flat the flange first mine was a mile out possible distorted through the heat from welding.
