Julian H
HiI have a 6 speed gearbox and want to replace my gear knob. I have searched and can only find reference to a Ford type 9 gearbox which has a 3/8" thread. Would that apply to my gearbox or if not, what thread do I have please? DJ.
There is only one gearlever shown on the Caterham parts site, and it looks just like the one on my type 9 box. So I think it would be the same 3/8 UNC thread as on my car.
Julian H
Super, thanks DJ. I have bought a 3/8bolt to check.Cheers
Support Team Shaun_E Posted August 3, 2015 Support Team Share Posted August 3, 2015 Just changed my 6 speed gear knob and it was an M10 thread so nothing is guaranteed. I bought the Quaiffe nylon one from Demon Tweeks. They sell it in 3/8, M10, M12.
A7 OOH
On my 1996 six speed box it is a 3/8 UNC
DJ.
M10 is very close to 3/8 UNC, I tapped a tube to go on my gear lever with a M10 thread and it fitted reasonably well. It was better when I used 3/8 though.
Julian H
HiI don't think it's M10, I tried my current gear knob on some studding and it would not do up. I didn't try too hard though, I didn't want to spoil the thread. 3/8 looks likely even though my box is a 2010 model!cheers, Julian
Julian H
Ok, it's not 3/8 so I am now confused!
SM25T
Remove the gear lever and take it to a fastener supplier ?
Julian H
Hi IanThats what I did last weekend to check the M10 thread but they didn't have any 3/8 bolts. I am now thinking maybe the bolt I tried was M10x1.25 and the lever thread looks coarser than that! Maybe it's M10x1.5?
Jonathan Kay
Back to basics: Can you post a photo of the lever? Are you sure there isn't an extension piece? What's the outside diameter of the shank just below the thread? Can you post a photo of the thread as close as possible to that of a known bolt?Or the fancy way: Bolt and Nut for iOS.JonathanPS: Did you take the lever or the knob? DJ.
They did send you a 3/8 UNC (coarse) not a UNF bolt didn't they?
Julian H
Hi gents and thankyou for your ongoing help!Rookie mistake I think. I didn't realise F in UNF was fine and coarse was available too! I have no extension piece and the unthreaded shaft measures 10mm or just under (I have no calipers so not 100% accurate I am afraid). I have now ordered an M10x1.5 and a 3/8UNC bolt. Unfortunately I have no source locally. I took the knob to the shop, not the lever. The reference bolt in the photo is 3/8UNF.Cheers, Julian
SM25T
It is very much C ... not F !
Jonathan Kay
Well done.Recommended cheap calipers, the identical model is available from lots of different sources.http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41hNZz-ejKL._SY355_.jpgAnd the little knurled knob rarely survives encounter with the enemy.Jonathan
Area Representative Golf Juliet Tango Posted August 8, 2015 Area Representative Share Posted August 8, 2015 Nothing guaranteed. I have a real Caterham branded gear knob which will not fit over either of the sticks in my Caterham. Not just the wrong thread but completely wrong size. Julian H
Thanks! All this to upgrade me knob Of the two options I suspect it is 3/8UNC. My Dad was round today and he found a nut in his box of bits and pieces that fitted the gearlever and I doubt, given the likely age of the content, it would be metric! Only a few days before the saga will be over!
SM25T
What style have you chosen ? I have a slimline Richbrook jobbie ..... a bit like a rifle bolt.
Julian H
A Reverie Lightbulb. I am not necessarily tied to that particular item, just want something simple and CF and like the CC aluminium's shape.
ECR
Depending on the age of your dad's nuts ........ It could be a 3/8" Whitworth nut which is the same diameter and thread pitch (3/8" x 16tpi) - just a 5 degree difference in thread angle and so would fit.
