L7 FST
Hi allstill getting used to the new-fangled Stack instrumentation on my car It has an analogue rev counter as part of the display, which seems to have a very slow reaction speed, and gives no coherent information below 4000 rpm, but I guess I can learn to live with that - or at least I could do.... but now the rev counter has stopped working altogether. It flickers when I start the engine, but then doesn't react or move again. I guess this must be a problem with the wire feeding in the engine speed. How do I identify this? And is there any other cause I should investigate? Thanks. L7 FST
Duratec with MBE. The Stack is an ST868, I gather..
Jonathan Kay
Do you have an Assembly Guide or wiring diagram? If you'd like one send me a Private Mail with your email address and I'll try and find the right one.Jonathan
tbird
the lack of response below 3-4k revs is normal , once you are at running revs its fine, shouldn't be too slow to respond, it uses a stepper motor so looks a bit notchy but never found mine was inacurate or unreliable, (other than now as the internal battery has packed in ) Stack are very helpful if you give them a ring on T: +44(0)1869 240404 I have the 8130 manual if you need a copyTim
L7 FST
Jonathan, Tim: Thanks both. Problem seems to be it's not picking up any input. According to the manual (which I do have, but find difficult to understand!) a wire marked ES (for engine speed) detects the rev speed at the coil and runs it to the Stack unit. The problem is I can't find it - so I can't check whether it's correctly connected at both ends! As you may have detected, I'm not an electrics/electronics genius - or even vaguely competent - so I need some patient help in layman's language: thank you for the Stack number, which I'll try tomorrow and see where that gets me to.. Thank you both again meanwhile - Stephen
tbird
my ignorance is coming in to play here, I guess from the manual you know the tacho connects either to the LT side of coil (which you probably don't have) or to Tacho output of ecu, although caterham may do something different as is their wont,my car not here so can't check anything but JK may be able to tell you which pin on ECU is Tachohowever found this post which may also help gives a possible wire for R500 might give you a pointer as it has worked previously I guess we are probably looking for something that has become loose/ dropped off :-) Tim
tbird
Have you removed and reconnected the plug on the back of the Stack, should be possible by feel , its similar to thishttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v672/orpheus_2005/2007/26-10-2007/new/Conector.jpgso you should be able to reach behind spin the locking coller and remove, actualy getting the dash out is not too difficult, can talk you through itTim
L7 FST
Thanks - definitely worth trying, so I just have....but I'm afraid it didn't make any difference. I'm going to phone Stack next, as you suggest. The R500 link was definitely relevant but another reminder to me that electronics is a language I don't speak! All your help v much appreciated nonetheless. Best - Stephen
tbird
you could also give Caterham Dartford a call, they helped me out a while back with a Stack problem and obviously they know where all the wires goCC Dartford 01322 625800
Jonathan Kay
We can probably help you get a bit further with identifying pins and wires (do you have colour codes on the diagram you are using?) but I don't know enough about the physical layout of your car to go beyond that.Jonathan
tbird
the stack manual isn't that helpful it just defines the wire as ES (engine speed) no colour, but from post I linked it may be Black and white and connected to the LT supply for the coil packs. be a lot easier if I was up in Skye :-) Tim
Jonathan Kay
Aha... do you both have the Caterham diagrams as well as the Stack manual?Jonathan
tbird
yes I do :-) stack 8130 dash instructions (1).pdf and my aide memoire for the Buttonsstack buttonsleft to right, shift light switch, switch 1, switch 2, switch 4, switch 3. L - R.... Shift light, 1, 2, 4, 3. 1 & 3 to switch MPH/KPH” I also have some notes on cal procedure for petrol tank, but they are hard copy and up in Skye, its not quite as simple as the manual suggests Tim
L7 FST
Ongoing thanks to Tim and Jonathan - but I think your kindness and expertise may be wasted on me! I have spoken to Stack today (good tip) who were very helpful. They confirm the problem is most likely to be at the ECU end and suggest finding a specialist with diagnostic equipment to investigate further, which I will do next.... tbird
Shame your in Kent, there seem to be stack dealers in all other areas around london, although I guess any decent motorsport garage could sort it, have none of the Kent members got a similar car fitted with a Stack gauge, there are some good guys down there, at least you would have something to compare . Actualy Caterham might be the best bet or what about Sevens and Classics at Brands. Good luck anyway sorry we couldn't sort it for you Tim
