Brake switch

Recommended Posts

I took my seven (2002 SV U.S. spec Zetec) to the Ford garage to be inspected and they tell me it needs a new brake switch, which they do not have. Can anyone tell me how to find the switch on the car? Maybe I can source one through Redline. Thanks to anyone who can help.

Usually under the pedal box cover. You can use any switch that fits in the bracket. You can also carefully prise the end cover off the switch and catch the spring. Take out the little brass u-shape bit and clean off the grease. Squeeze the ends of the 'U' so they touch the contact at the back end of the switch. Reassemble .... noting the spring only goes one way round. Easy fix

As above +

  1. I'd check that the problem is in the switch before changing it or fettling. Do you have a multimeter? If not short the terminals on the switch and see if the lights come on.
  2. Check the mechanical action of the pedal on the switch.
  3. Note SM25T's comment about catching the spring. It's contractually bound to make a bid for freedom as soon as the switch is opened, and some are never seen again.
