Leadership Team 700newtons Posted June 1, 2015 Leadership Team Share Posted June 1, 2015 I'm putting super unleaded in my 160 (with its Suzuki k6a engine). Any wisdom about choice of fuel appreciated... I understand that for older engines whether you use 95 or 98 doesn't make any difference.
SM25T
As it is new .. I would ask the manufacturer.
simon_h
160 is mapped for 95. No gains to be had with 98.
CharlesElliott
I've got one, works fine.
Leadership Team 700newtons Posted June 1, 2015 Author Leadership Team Share Posted June 1, 2015 Thanks Simon. So I suppose that fancy fuel will just keep the engine clean at best. How did you know this by the way?
simon_h
Use 98 if you want for that reason but it won't give you anything on the standard engine spec. I may have been there when it was done.....
Ian B
I thought from the thread title that this was going to be about fitting a dump valve to a seven
Leadership Team 700newtons Posted June 1, 2015 Author Leadership Team Share Posted June 1, 2015 No, that is something like the noise it makes.
stallard68
The unmistakable noise of the 160 Its great to listen to as you go up and down the gears. I've just stuck with regular unleaded and its working a treat.
NedK
Simon_HInteresting. So, do you think there's any more capability in the engine? I've seen crazy Japanese website where they've got 100+hp from the K6A engine. And on my first test drive, the CC sales guy did mention that there was rumours of an ECU remap at some point...CheersNed
simon_h
No not really any more power to be had in the standard form and believe me we looked for it.You would need a bigger turbo and all that goes with it to get the 100hp.Have a look at this to see what lengths the Japanese have gone to for 0.5hp, i.e. nothing really.http://www.speedhunters.com/2015/06/less-is-more-caterham-160/As to what ideas CCL have for this car I dont know as we all got made redundant last year. martyn
Simon, do you know of any caterham cars that weren't mapped using standard 95? i.e. are there any cars where it is important to use the expensive stuff for best engine performance..?Cheers. Jonathan Kay
When Ratrace rebuilt my factory-ish 1800 K they recommended 98 RON.Jonathan
NedK
Thanks for the info, Simon. The Speedhunters article is interesting - not sure what I think about the new tyres. I had assumed that the car was designed around the concept of narrow tyres with high walls. Although the manifold looks rather nice, I don't think it's worth it for 1/2hp, you're right... Even in combo with the exhaust, for another 1/2hp. Probably get just as much by cleaning the airfilter! All the bestNed
Grandmaster Flatcap
I like the look af the replacment wheels though.
rj
If the engine is mapped for 95 the only "gain" from 98 is less power as it burns slower.Of course if you are unsure that the 95 at your pump is not up to spec it's safer to use 98.
